My bro lost his wallet and went just as most of the cheap people in here said: someone took the cash and sent the wallet back.
I actually found cash near a bank and returned it. Heaven forbid someone do a good deed now days. ;P
So yeah, I would open it, look for ID and get it to the owner as soon as possible. But there are a lot of really lousy people now days.
Maybe one day you'll get lucky and find a wallet with counterfeit money, or drug money, or money reported stolen and you'll get what ya have coming.

I've found lots of things in my life...diamond ring, pearl ear rings, a dog, a snake, a kid, etc. etc. never a wallet though...
It depends really. I would like to think that i would return it with everything intact including any cash. But unfortunately temptation is a cruel mistress, so until it happens I do not know.

Same, I've found lots of things.
I found 500 dollars when I was 8 (I went and spent it all on spiderman things that after noon)
I found a guy that was high, he was apparently named Roger and he now lives in the bush next to my house(He followed me home >.>)
I found a scratchie card with 50 dollar prize on it
I found a kid under my parents car and I was like WTF
And I've found usual things, 5 cent coins etc..

I think unless the id has a picture of a super hot blond model type (where returning the wallet you would be her hero) id like keep the cash and mail the person the ids and credit cards. i mean even if you do return it with everything whats to say the person wont think you took it?

Wow. I know who I'd want to watch my back.
I guess I look at it pretty simply... let's say there's a wallet with 500 bucks in it that's then lost/misplaced.
If I'm the person who lost that 500 bucks, I may now be in big trouble. That might be a mortgage payment, or grocery money, or (these days) gas money, without which I could lose my house, my family doesn't eat, or I can't get to work.
Conversely, if I'm the one who finds that wallet, I'm holding 500 bucks more than I started the day with; 500 bucks that isn't mine. For me, holding to the Law of Return means that keeping that wallet/money only sets me up for thrice the grief caused to the person who's wallet this is. The opposite is also true, when I return it instead.
I'd rather be known for being generous with little than stingy with a lot.

I'd take the money, and leave the wallet. And to the above post...I'm more for self-preservation.

Depends, if I saw the person drop it I'd give it back.
If I found it and I know the person I'd give it back
If I found it and have no clue who the person is, forget it, it's mine. I ain't gonna look for you.

Wallet, attempt to find the owner to a reasonable extent.
Just plain cash on the ground, it's mine.

If you have 500 dollars in your wallet as in CASH. You deserve to loose your wallet.
