Default Metal Help!!

hi all, ive recently gotten interested in the "darker" subgenres of metal, so i was wondering if any metalheads out there could lend this newb a hand... i am in search of band recommendations for:

melodic black metal

melodic death metal

doom metal with predominantly clean male vocals

doom metal with predominantly clean female vocals

i really like metal with a heavily atmospheric/epic feel. thanks in advance! metal on! \m/

if you really like metal then try to find bands urself and don't let ppl show you bands.
I've been hardly into metal for years but i got fed up with all these wannabe-bm and fat Viking Metalers who spent their whole life in the internet -.-
If you don't want to become such a wannabe just listen to what YOU like.

Dimmu Borgir (Male Vocalists) and Lacuna Coil (Female Vocalists) are two that I would recommend, they're more ''Common'' so you might know of them already. Dunno what you mean by ''Clean'' though, as in Clean lyrics? or Clean voice quality (As in you can hear them very well, or?)

This is true too, just listen to what you like. I'm just putting a couple of bands there for you to try, Lacuna Coil is a lovely band though, her voice is so pretty, had to recommend them.

clean, meaning smooth singing and not growls. i like growls but mainly in black/death metal, or even metalcore (they each have variations though). just in my opinion, they dont fit other subgenres (power, symphonic, doom)

yes, i like dimmu borgir and lacuna coil.

the last thing i want is to be a poser, that would suck... but still, all your recommendations will be checked out and ultimately decided upon by me.

so please post your favorite bands that specifically meet the criteria in the original post. thanks \m/

he did not ask for power metal
well i wouldn't recommand dimmu borgir. They made some good songs in their early days but after the first albums they changed (not really in a positive way).
Ok i'll give you a few names, but check out the songs for yourself.
Xasthur (melodic black metal with doom influences...
Throne of Ahaz
Taake
Try these out if you like dark atmosphere...
For doom metal: try out grand magus.

doom metal with predominantly clean female vocals:

The perfect band for you is Octavia Sperati. Very clean female vocals and a heavy atmospheric feel.

Can't go wrong with Lamb of God, great lyrics and riffs. The vocals aren't what you'd call clear since the singer's voice is so low and screamy. Iron Maiden is also great and have the best singer in the world (Bruce Dickinson).

Dragonforce I'm sorry to say sucks, listen to their lyrics and tell me it doesn't remind you of Runescape.

dudes... he asked for black/death/doom metal...
why do you guys come up with oldschool bands like Iron Maiden or Metalcore bands like Lamb of God and Power Metal...
if you don't know any bands of the genre he asked for then just don't post here oO
you seriously think anyone asking for metal bands doesn't know iron maiden?
That's sad :/
Well the musicans of Dragonforce are great, especially the freaking asian guy knows how to play guitar. But their music kinda sucks imo (ur right about that naughty). Sounds like an eunuch + nintendo sounds in the background ;P

I mostly listen to Doom with growls, so I don't know if these will do it for you since you're looking for clean vocals.

Some genres/bands that might interest you:
Agalloch
Primordial (their "To the Nameless Dead" album is my favourite of 2007)
Eluveitie
Isis
Between the Buried and Me (I despise Metalcore but this band is pretty good)
Empyrium
Therion
Battlelore
Bal-Sagoth

There, have fun!

PS: Please, stop mentioning Dragonboredom when it comes to Metal discussion.

Well...I'll probably get laughed out of this thread but heres what I used to listen to (and still do quite frequently)..not exactly on par with doom metal..but still holds its own in my books..I don't find anything overly melodic anymore.

Sepultura (specific songs maybe Arise or Dead Embryotic Cells)
Venom (just good old fashioned metal)
Children of Bodem (yea)
Dream Theater (wow..outstanding musicians)
Slayer (anything old specifically Reign in Blood a ton of amazing guitar work)
Annihilator (nostalgia for me,the song Alice in Hell)
Entombed (rawr)
Sacrifice (extremely hard to find)

Also while not exactly Death or Doom,a few songs by Metallica really were musically entertaining for me such as,The Call of Ktulu,Fade to Black,Blackened,The Four Horsemen, and definitely 2 of my favorite songs will always be Orion (Master of Puppets) and Welcome Home Sanitarium (Master of Puppets.)

god have I "dated" myself yet..?

While I'm not a big fan of the kind of stuff you're after, you can't skip on classic stuff like Sacramentum (shit is too good )and Dissection.

Greek BM may not fit your definition of "melodic BM". I don't think you'd like Rotting Christ, though I like them a lot better than most of the bands posted D:

Other classics you shouldn't miss:

Entombed - Left Hand Path
Amorphis - The Karelian Isthmus and Tales from a Thousand Lakes

Astriaal's Renascent Misanthropy album is the first good BM I've heard in a long time. Asgard's "To a Golden Age" is some pretty epic death metal, but you may have to develop a taste for it, especially since the style is very "primitive" and uninviting to listeners who don't have an ear for this kind of stuff. Summoning isn't technically melodic black metal, but skipping it is a crime imo.

I'd say there's really no point in exploring any Emperor besides In the Nightside Eclipse, they've never been able to match the epic scale and creativity of this masterpiece again.

Dark Tranquillity's "The Gallery" is something you've probably already listened to, but if you haven't I'd say get it as soon as possible. It seems to fit your tastes perfectly.

Primordial was a very good recommendation, but I'd recommend "The Gathering Wilderness" as the album of choice. Another doom band you may want to check out is Thorns of the Carrion, I don't know much about them at all but the little I've listened to has been enjoyable.

You're free to like and listen to whatever you want, but if I had some control over your musical preference I'd violently stop you from listening to Dimmu Burger and Lacuna Coil.

The following is a list of groups in the Black Metal scene, and those closely associated with it, that I listen to. This list is not complete. I will likely continue to update this as needed.

I would strongly advise against listening to mainstream versions of these genre's, as they merely try to duplicate the sound (usually failing), without any of the meaning behind it. Examples would be Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, & Slipknot. Also, sadly, many groups eventually loose their touch, or 'sell out', becoming much like the mainstream groups with their later albums. These later albums are also best avoided. The most notable example of this would be Cradle of Filth.

Many of these groups are difficult to find, for downloading, & purchase. Most have samples available on myspace. For downloading, I would recommend torrents - isohunt has been effective for me. For purchase, The End Records has most available.

Autumn Tears Neo-Classical Experimental Music

Bathory Black Metal, Viking/Thrash Metal
Intermediate albums not recommended.

Beherit Black Metal (1989-1993), Dark Ambient (1994-1995)
Not highly recommended.

Borknagar Black Metal, Progressive Viking, Folk Metal
Not highly recommended.

Burzum Black Metal, Ambient

Carpathian Forest Black Metal

Cradle of Filth Black/Gothic Metal (early), Extreme Gothic Metal (recent)
Recent albums are crap.

Dark Army Black Metal
Extremely difficult to find. If anyone happens to find a torrent of their work, please send me a PM as to where.

Darkthrone Death Metal (early) - Black Metal (now)

Darkwell Gothic, Doom Metal

Dimmu Borgir Melodic Black/Symphonic Extreme Metal

Draconian Gothic Doom Metal

Dragonlord Symphonic Black/Thrash Metal

Emperor Black Metal
One of (possibly the) greatest groups of the genre.

Forest of Shadows Doom Metal
One of my top 5.

Gorgoroth Black Metal

Howling Syn Gothic Metal with Medieval Influences
Extremely difficult to find. If anyone happens to find a torrent of their work, please send me a PM as to where.

Katatonia Doom/Death Metal, Depressive Rock

Lacrimosa Gothic, Metal, Classical

Leave's Eyes Gothic/Symphonic Metal
First album recommended only if you do not mind shitty lyrics. Unsure about later works.

Moonspell Folk Black (early), Gothic Metal (middle carreer), Gothic / Black (now)

My Dying Bride Death/Doom Metal, Gothic Metal

Ningizzia Symphonic Doom/Death Metal

November's Doom Death/Doom Metal
Has a 'mainstream' feel. I still enjoy their work occasionally.

Old Man's Child Melodic Black Metal
Just don't watch them live.

Opeth Extreme Progressive Metal

Satyricon Black Metal
Avoid Volcano

Shape of Despair Funeral Doom Metal

Sins of Thy Beloved, The Symphonic Gothic/Doom Metal

Soil Bleeds Black, The Medieval Neo-Folk

Tartaros Black Metal

Theatre of Tragedy Doom/Death Metal (early), Atmospheric Gothic Metal (now)
One of my top 5 (early works). Avoid Assembly. Middle works are Industrial.

Thy Serpent Melodic Dark/Black Metal
One of my top 5.

Tristania Gothic Metal

Unto Ashes Gothic, Folk
One of my top 5.

Venom NWOBHM/Black/Speed Metal
Not recommended - mentioned only because of their influence on Black Metal, and their founding of the term.

Virgin Black Doom/Gothic/Symphonic Metal
One of my top 5.

Xandria Gothic Metal

The following are groups I have learned of through various sources - I have not listened to them enough (if at all) to accurately pass judgment on them. This list is not complete. I will likely update it as I remember more, or come across those I was previously unaware of.

Ahab
Arafel
Astarte
Ayreon
Azrael
Behemoth
Bethlehem
Blackthorn
Chthonic
Daath
Dark Moor
Desert
Diabolical Masquerade
Draconian
Dragonlord
Elegeion
Gehenna
Immortal
Lord Belial
Naglfar
Nocte Obducta
Paradise Lost
Runemagick
Samael
Shade Empire
Thyrane
