Ok, this is actually serious , "The Death Of The Internet" is based on the fact that companies are trying to eliminate the principal of Net Neutrality

Wikipedia's definition is

Network neutrality (equivalently net neutrality, Internet neutrality or simply NN) is a principle that is applied to residential broadband networks, and potentially to all networks. A neutral broadband network is one that is free of restrictions on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, on the modes of communication allowed, which does not restrict content, sites or platforms, and where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams

Basically this means that all websites on the internet are on a level playing field, to have equal speeds and no influence or biased on anything

Virgin Media CEO Neil Berkett (also other companies) are trying to eliminate this and limit the possibility of small websites who aren't paying the company huge amounts of money to load slower , or to be eliminated completely.

The idea of having corporations pay to have their content visible/faster/etc. has been around for a few years. To see a CEO say it though puts it in the realm of "concerning". Some companies may jump on that bandwagon just because it's mentioned which would start a domino effect. Let's hope it won't spread further then just a random news story.

What's not to understand? People these days are so goddam greedy they try to milk anything, and I mean anything for money.

It is extremely frustrating that people would do this just to make more money, but greed is always present in humanity. Hope that this never actually happens.

What I don't get is that he made the snafu back in early April... this now is mid-June, and he's still working for Virgin. I guess sudden onset of stupidity isn't cause enough for terminating a contract.

Watch the iPower videos on YouTube. They are very passionate about this subject. I'm still a bit sceptical to whether I believe what they say 100%...but still, some of their claims are quite frightening.

AtheneWins is the channel on YouTube I think. But be warned, half are iPower clips, half are Athene making "funny" videos.

Traffic discrimination has already begun happening in the other direction (the user-to-net direction) under the misnomer of "Quality of Service" or "QoS." Do a google search for recent news about Comcast.

In all honesty, would you have said things like the DMCA and Guantanamo would have been possible (in the USA) in 2000?

10 years ago, hackers making a good life of their "hobby" could be counted on both hands. Nowadays, hackers not making a life using their skills are rare (they're script kiddies). They litterally make millions at the click of a mouse, this is no joke or scifi story.

6-7 years ago, the dot com boom happened, and very quickly collapsed, taking with it thousands of life. Nowadays, social networking websites are exploding in numbers and coverage, changing (for good and bad) the life of millions, since it's widely accessible because people have broadband or smartphones. The gaming industry is the biggest software industry, and it's more important (or is about to) than Hollywood, see GTA IV. Yesterday Firefox 3 was downloaded at 14,000 times a minute, pushing PUBLIC servers to 13Go/s of transfer. WoW chinese servers running transactions for 1million users AT THE SAME TIME.

Things change in unexpected ways (last week, the British government passed an extremely controversial law for detaining terror suspects without charge for 42 days under false pretense, making this duration 4,5days longer than in China). I don't like this, but I can see reasons why it could happen. And thus, reasons why we, the people, need to start pushing for a counter-change.

The net was turned into a marketing utopia soon after it's genesis. It took a minute for the corporations to catch on, but once they did the population explosion of advertising and commercial websites was exponential. We went from personal websites with neon green font on black background to commercial websites overnight.

You're talking about the "web", not the "net". Usenet is the best example of how an e-community managed to grow under the "right" control of users, but usability got the best ouf of it, and Tim Berners-Lee and his colleagues made the WWW real. Now, people understand the digital world as they understand politics: they only see what's best for them and not what it is.
