I just checked newegg and they dropped the price of GTX 280's over 100$ on some of the models, that is insane!, they were 650$ on release not long ago, now the XFX version is down to 519$.

Hmm... might be a very good move for them for that intense price drop, to stay competitive with the ATI offerings.

Cheapest in Australia = $627 and that's for generic stock model. Consider yourself lucky

I can't move it, though. I know in Aus it is expensive though, I do feel sorry for you over there, it's a real pain.

At any rate, I still think 500$ is too expensive.. now 400-450$.. that number might talk.

the one thing about competing in computer hardware, is that in order to actually get ahead of the competition, you need to put out parts that decisively beat the competitions. it's not enough to just "match" the competition (like the HD3000 and 8800GT). reason being that customers tend to be somewhat brand-loyal. if a geforce worked for them before, they'll go with another geforce, unless the new radeons completely destroy the current geforces.

this win for AMD is pretty amazing on two levels:

1) they are extremely competitive with nvidia's newest generation cards. the HD4870 essentially ripped the GTX260 into little pieces, and is dangerously close to the GTX280 in many benchmarks
2) they offered that performance at a lower price than nvidia's last generation cards. the HD4850 offered performance better than the 9800GTX, and was initially $100 cheaper.

if nvidia wants to jump ahead the next round, they'll need to either resoundingly beat the next generation radeons and match their price, or they will need to match the next generation radeons in performance, and beat the price of the current generation HD4800s. it will be rather difficult either way.
