Read today's newsletter. The scale of upcoming changes is massive and awesome. Item drops from red players alone will take this game a long way.

You read my mind!
Here it is: http://funcom.cachefly.net/WebFiles/Newsletter/Issue17/
Great stuff on there, and not too long to wait either. Everyone knows this game has potential, and if FC deliver on everything in that newsletter, it'll live up to the potential.

Alright, played it from release thoroughly, and now taking a stop back here.
It's unfinished. Funcom has no idea what the ---- they are doing with the class balance (poor Necromancers ), there's no finished endgame, PvP levels weren't even implemented at release, patches do not address critical game issues, game freezes regularly, etc... the problems go on and on. In short, it's a standard Next-Gen game.
Oh, and there's no pure Heal/Prot class like the Gw Monk, which is what I wanted to play; all they have are heal/DPS hybrids.
All in all the game has great potential, but I'd personally recommend not to buy it for now; better to wait and see if Funcom pulls their ---- together. Or just buy Diablo 3 when it comes out; at least Blizzard makes finished games.
Also, I used to think ArenaNet was doing fairly badly with Gw, but I've come to realize, after seeing Funcom, that the ArenaNet devs really do know what they're doing, and are a very skilled group.

There's a difference in the approaches.
ArenaNet created a great game, but they stopped caring enough about it a long time back. I don't blame them -- after a point, updates on a free-to-play model start making less and less business sense, and so they devoted most of their time and resources for GW2, which is cool. GW was created as a play-and-forget model initially(but later they added time sinks when they saw that enough of their playerbase wanted that), so I don't blame them at all, but I'd like to see a subscription based GW type game sometime.
Without a doubt, AoC is unfinished, lacks polish and their Q&A department is embarrassing, and it's completely not worthwhile to be playing AoC right now, but still FunCom do care a lot about the game and know that *if* they get it right, AoC still has the potential to be a cashcow. A $15 sub game that can sustain > 500K is extremely profitable and will even give them the revenue to develop expansions and sequels without external financing.
The big factor going for AoC is lack of strong competitors in the market right now. There's a lot of current and former WoW people playing AoC while waiting for WotLK. There's a lot of WAR fans playing AoC while waiting for WAR and so on.
So they have some time to get it right, but if they don't, this will be the biggest waste of potential the gaming industry has seen.

yes, this indeed sux :/ was really looking forward to play it
i picked Tempest of Set for my main, he *should* be a "priest" and in 40 levels all i got is one usefull HoT and one quick heal that has *long*secs recharge and can be used on single player once per 60secs :/
i know that priest of mitra not is best healer, but even he can use some HoT's and not many real heals
i unfortenatly already bought a game card and can just cancel subscription or something

Priests of Mitra are the best healers in the game, their DPS is a good amount less then a Tempest of Set.
A Priest of Mitra has much more CC gameplay mechanics as well, think of them as having Smite prayers of Monks in GW. Not the most damage but a lot of crowd control, and by that I mean good knock downs and decent AoE. They play much more defensively then a ToS.
A Tempest of Set has much more aggressive spells and better AoE damage, they have some snares as well which rock in PvP. All in all, they don't have as much CC as a PoM but still.
I wouldn't cancel your subscription, pay a visit to the Age of Conan Forums, go to the class sub forums and look at some builds. You must realize that outside of the Priests only 1-2 other professions ACTUALLY have heals. Just because the heals in this game are more designed for fluid uninterrupted combat, does not mean that there is no healer class in this game. HoT's are vital support in any PvP scenario, and a PoM or ToS can fill that roll pretty well. Now if you're looking to play a more support class if you can't live with out pure heal, Bear shamans would be your best pick.

I have tried 5 character classes now - ToS, Assasin, Demonologist, HoX and Dark Templar.
Out of the 5 I ditched the HoX because I wanted to dual wield daggers so changed over to the Assasin, which turns out to likely be the most disadvantaged, yet fun melee class in the game.
Assasins are extremely weak, particularly in PVP, and are very squishy as they are melee with just cloth armor. However when you get the sneak attacks and combos right, their damage output is immense, although it still seemed somewhat behind both the HoX and the Demo to me.
I dont think there is going to be much class preferance in AoC like there is in GW. All the classes play very similarly with good DPS, and the difference between each is purely in the playstyle rather then in DPS or group preferance.
And I'm not a raider anyway, so I couldnt care much about what happens there.

Thanks for the info man.
I'm certainly going to try this game out as it sounds like I might be able to actually play a class and game style I enjoy and not get abused for it breaking the game.
Hopefully they buff the class and fix the overall issues in the game but it sounds like you have already enjoyed playing it anyway.
Cheers.

That's quite an old post btw(which you quoted). I'm still playing AoC but it's quite dire right now. "Fix the overall issues in the game" will take a lot of time and work. This game got a lot of sales through word of mouth and people being bored of doing the same thing in other games.
The same 2 factors will bring it down unless the promised pvp overhaul comes really fast. Just to give you an indication - my guild had 100+ active members in the first week of June, and now has about 25 active accounts remaining.
(active=log in once every 2-3 days at least)
Even if you can live with the technical issues and lack of sufficient quality content, this game suffers from massive mechanics problems and vulnerabilities. Nothing like seeing people solo raid bosses..

The only big problem I'm having from the game is when 3 20+ people get their kicks PKing level 10-15 people near the enterance to the newbie pvp zone.
In other words, I'm not having too many technical problems compared to some of the loser problems the game is having.

I don't think AoC is anywhere near doomed as most people say it is. When GW first came out I played it for 2-3 months, then didn't touch it until Factions came out, then played pretty steadily until as of late 2007. I'm doing the same with Age of Conan as well, I played the game when it was released saw what I liked and I what I didn't- and I will give it the needed time that's so essential for it to evolve into a much better product worth the 15 dollar subscription fee.
Its only been a month now, and already dramatic changes are coming, of course with every new thing that the community accepts positively there will be a few negative aspects as well. The only true option is to be patient, voice your opinion on the official forums and observe what path the dev's take in fixing/balancing the mechanics of the game. As of right now AoC is playable and extremely fun, to me it's easily the most enjoyable MMO on the market.

I see and thanks to you too for the info.
Heres hoping they sort it out in the near future and I'll keep an eye out here for updates as the potential looks pretty good and I'd love an in-between MMO till GW2 comes out.

Whats even funnier is that you CAN walk through people with the CTRL button and slow movement.
I think it is CTRL anyway.
I stopped playing due to lack of content, but will come back in 1 or 2 months after they add more stuff.
Pretty much after all this stuff is done:

Try Sacred 2 which is due for release in september, it is regarded to be the best Diablo clone ever and the first one was seriously addictive and fun:

Yea, I have Sacred 2 and Spore on preorder and they should serve me well untill Diablo 3.
There is also Fable 2 coming out soon, but I havnt seen a PC release planned, only X box 360 which is terribad!
And I never bought the Witcher, but it looks like sexist crap.
I bought the first diablo too late and couldnt get into it because of the bad grapics. Back when it was first out I was a hardcore Baldurs gate fan and think that I played through both games over 20 times. I never even knew what Diablo was.
