The screenshots that they showed are all apparently from Act I. So it's quite possible that the game starts off in a reasonably 'bright' manner(after all nothing has happened in the last 20 years), and towards the later acts, it starts getting darker/grittier.

If I plan to play Diablo 3, why would I bother picking up an MMO prior to D3's release date, knowing that I'd just quit GW2 in a few months once D3 came out? Similarly, if GW2 releases after D3, what would divert my attention from D3 to GW2?
It comes down to time limitation - certainly, if you have enough free time to be playing both games simultaneously, you could buy both. For those of us that only have time for one or the other (or would like to devote all time to one or the other), plans to play one will exclude the other regardless of the relative release dates (unless they are years apart - unlikely, in this case).

Finally, Blizzard take a move! I can't wait to play D3. If I can recall, Diablo and GW are only games that I enjoy playing.
Why I should make a choice when I can take both...

why in the WORLD would you want to play a repeat of wow? i am a wow addict, sadly. i am trying to get out of it by getting back into GW or soon AoC. n/m...different strokes for different folks, i just don't see the appeal of the CARTOON-ISH looks to games. big turn off.

Thank you OP!!!! I didn't know d3 was in the works.
I would have originally said d3 all the way because of the silly stuff anets been pulling (GRINDING FTL). But their new update, that's a little late, but fixes some of the grinding issues makes me hope that they might be finally be getting it.
Now I will probably try both and play which ever one has better mechanics. I am slightly more interested in d3 since it sounds like gw2 will be more of the same. I wish GW would have had some of the d2 type moves. Especially that barbarian leaping into fights and then whirlwinding through people. It was such a big and fluid maneuver compared to any war action in gw. Besides story and small things, D2 has nothing much to compare to GW, but d2 is 10 years old now. But hopefully D3 or gw2 will really surpass everything we've had so far.

So many games, so little money.
SC2, D3 and GW2 all roughly in the fall of 09...
Bummer.

If ANet are smart, they won't release GW2 the same time as SC2 and D3 are being released. That would be asking to sell less.
I just hope they don't start rushing GW2 because of the competition.

From some of the developer comments, the chances of that happening seem pretty high actually.

I don't think they will. I have a feeling we will be waiting a long time for GW2 release...

If they don't hold it off, they are going to get utterly destroyed.

Right. As good as Guild Wars 2 may be, the masses will be dying for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.
Carebears and people who've never played SC/D before are probably going to go for GW2, though. At least ANet will make some sales!

I'll try both, but I'm way more excited about GW2 than D3 (never played any diablo before)

So if you don't know anything about GW2, how do you know it's a WoW clone then? Really.

For some odd reason, some people are convinced GW2 is going to be a WoW clone, based on everything ANet has told us about GW2.

Because if there were no instances in GWEN, it would be a worse clone of WoW. And we already know that there will be bigger level cap, open world and basing on the changes they made (or changes they DIDN'T make) since GWEN's release, GW2 will have more in common with WoW/WoW 2 than with GW:P.

GW 2 only if it's released before D3. Once D3 is out, it's D3 all the way.

OMG, I'm excited about both. I don't dedicated myself to games very often, and I play many games within a short period of time. Heck, my Xfire shows that I've played six games over the past week, and all but one of them has at least five hours logged into each. I seriously can't pick a game to dedicate myself to and will probably be playing both GW2 and D3 along with many other games. Maybe D3 will have half an hour more of playtime than GW2, maybe not.

Well it probably wont be Diablo 3. I've never been a huge Diablo fan... Or a Blizzard fan for that matter.
So it will most likely be GW2, but I'm no fanboi so I'm not going to just rush out and buy it the day it's released.
EDIT: Abedeus... Never assume... Even if the level cap was raised up to 1000 we still have no idea how fast it will be to level, we only know some of the details. Assuming what the game will be like now is just foolish.
