- I'm just wondering why on earth do you people think MMOs are the only games in the world. Every single MMO I've played have had zero depth in gameplay, focus on grind and development resources spent on graphics and modeling. Why do some companies think they're made Midas's Hand generating 15 bucks a month for every active subscriber without making a good game?

Its not that mmos are the only games in the world - for myself I've been playing orange box, civ4, oblivion, and other stuff - its just that mmos can be a lot of fun. The depth for me isn't in the pve grind aspect of the game though that can be fun. In guildwars, the depth came via organized pvp play and the social aspect of the game. While other games like the ones mentioned are fun, I don't like them nearly as much as GW. Now that guildwars is showing its age, people like me naturally want to find something to replicate that same experience and take the genre to the next level. The problem is that just hasn't happened yet.

Honestly the reason you did not like AoC is because you were already so used to the reserved set up of GW. The reason GW is so complete is because of how little ambition the game itself has. Yes there are many of skills, but half of them see no use. There are many forms of PvP, but they are all virtually the same. PvE is the same set up over and over again. The problem with games like Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, etc etc- is that the design of MMO's simply does not accommodate a very in depth "single player" like experience. GW is a great game, but there's just so little to do in it.
This is why many people prefer WoW to GW. WoW has the completeness of GW's short sighted goals, but over the scale of a much longer experience. With the next expansion they're constantly trying to add some sort of new feature, GW did this- but when Anet added new features they realized just how restricting the design of GW is. There really was no room to branch out in a new direction, heroes/ better versions of henchman, larger missions, etc etc its more of an evolutionary path for the franchise rather then a revolutionary path.
When playing a different MMO especially within the first 3-4 months of it's release, one is so attuned to GW's sense of 97% of the game works, 3% doesn't that they're able to pick out flaws immediately. This is, like I said due to ambition, AoC lacks the polish and shine of GW, its not because its a worse game then GW. The game design itself has HUGE potential, but they simply do not have the massive amounts of man power to see it achieved. GW's game design does not have as much potenial, its on a much smaller scale, thus they're able to do realize their visions more easily. This is why we're getting GW2, and not more expansions of GW1.

AoC...prob biggest waste of £60 EVER. I haven't played it since a week after launch. Had sooo much promise too. Not played an online game in months, been busy with the PS3 and Football Manager.

I had found the same thing a while back....got bored of gw so went on to try other mmos.....WoW, Archlord, LoTRO, oh and that really shitty new one that is supposed to be a horror mmo, but was a very bad Archlord clone(Requiem)....make a long story short all the other mmo's were pretty much all running on the WoW engine. Had inferior graphics to gw and gameplay was lacking....I mean they all have thier good points but they didnt seem to be the overall package that GW is.
As for AoC, here is a review:

AOC had promise, but while it has to this point failed in its ambitious goals, there are fundamental problems on even the small scale that make - for me - a worse gaming experience. Patch after patch, nothing really seemed to change for the better. New bugs, real problems ignored, new problems introduced. The ambitious combat system which was supposed to be revolutionary is in reality shallow. The classes are generally uninteresting and unbalanced. PvP is still bad at this point. Basic game features don't really function properly. The interface is god awful. Game content rather than being rich and full and ambitious is thinner than GW by far at this point as you progress.
That said, I did have fun with it for a while and it was a beautiful game to look at. The full 3d world was a breath of fresh air (though swimming up waterfalls is a little dumb). But in the end the notion that there is something truly 'revolutionary' here whereas gw is not seems misleading. What is AOC? A weak story that barely acts as a skeleton on which to hang what? Quests. Quest after Quest. Wait there are dungeons and special bosses! Oh, yeah thats not new. There is crafting! Oh that doesn't work very well and has been done before. There are BOOBS! There is already the internet. Whats left? World pvp aka pking random people out of boredom?
The only thing ambitious and revolutionary in this game are the graphics. There is massive scale pvp, but that is massively buggy and slow. Even that isn't really revolutionary, its just pvp gone up in scale.
GW is an old game its ambitions were certainly revolutionary for there time, but that time is coming to an end fast.
