Free to play RPGs that serve as break from GW
after 3 years of playing GW i get tired of it once in a while, so i drift to other games just to change of scenery, but i always end up coming back to GW, therefor knowing that this game will be abandoned in a few months, i dont want to pay for a game unless i really like it.
so there are those free RPGs, with the option to buy in game items from a game server. there are a few of them, and what is nice is that you can play all you wish, without spending 1 penny on the game, but if you wish to you can buy items for real money which is on a server in game itself that is supported by the game, this is how they make money without forcing you to buy a CD before you know if you like the game, and without forcing you to pay month fees in case you are broke.
but when you feel like it, you can actually buy game bonuses that you can trade to other players for real money, or use yourself to make your game funner or easier (note: not an auto win button, just makes the game more enjoyable).
of course nobody is making you buy those items for money, using real money is a short cut. you can always generate in game income to buy those items from other players, which also generates the game economy, since players that want a short cut will buy those items to sell them to real in game reach people.
i have played 2 of these games, and i like that system that doesnt force you to spend 1 penny, since players that dont generate players that will.
so far i have played Flyff (Fly For Fun) major grind fest, nothing in this game except for grind and fancy items, therefor you either get extremelly addicted to it, or get bored quickly. crappy graphics, game mostly relies on community to keep people playing rather then the game itself... Level cap is 120 :s
and WOKF (World of Kung Fu) which is more based on quests, and even has an option to let you level up afk using reward points you get from doing quests and killing. Can be fun to team up like in GW since it has instances, or just play in the one instanced world with other people questing or just grinding, even tough killing monsters for exp is extremely unrewarding. Has alot of options, such as become a king of a country and set the rules in there, get married (yes in game weddings!) and get bonus exp from playing with your partner, also allows you to telleport to partner at any time) and so on, i dont think i know about all the features of this game yet. Not bad graphics, here is a screenie just to show you. Level cap is 70, i think.

I've learned that most if not all freeware games are generally crap. If you're itching for a no bucks experience, I'd suggest playing demos or trials of games. The Tabula Rasa trial is worth a look, you may actually enjoy it.
If you touch any of those korean games that all look the same however, shame on you.

When I was young and naive I played Runescape for quite a while.
My shame is deep.

I liked Silkroad Online, which is (or was) very much like GW, but not as good (but completely free).
I love Trackmania Nations Forever (obviously not an RPG but a great game with awesome graphics and the smoothest animation I've ever seen).
It's good to be able to come back to GW after a break (I guess that's also what Anet would like us to do).

FlyFF is so boring imo... The only fun thing is flying, so the game wears its name well. But it becomes really boring very fast, and the flying combat system is trash.
If you like grind you'll like it. If not the game isn't for you.

RFOnline is free. Use to be P2P, but it failed miserably
2moons - Has graphics similar to WoW. Was the testing ground for Hellgate London, but proved to so popular they plan on releasing a final version.
Hellgate London is a pretty good hack n slash. You'd have to buy the game though. That would keep you interested for a few months.

Perfect World, great game. Free MMORPG that is not a grindfest because of large amount of quests.

EDIT: If you want to try it, you have to download the patches manually, and after that,

Somewhere on that thread is the solution
EDITEDIT: Not sure if they fixed the problem

I tried Atlantica Online, quite a nice game that. It's not as ...primitive... as most f2p games are.
But i still have to find a game that would be worth investing time in besides GW.

Talking about WoW private servers is fine, really.
With that said, play WoW private servers.

actually at a certain point i was going to try out dungeon runners, but it was before the release, so later i simply forgot about it
so is it any good?
and wow, well, i don't like wow in general, i have tried it on a private server and stayed in the game for about 30 minutes to know that i will never want to play it again. Atlantica online seems nice too, will try that out!
and hey, those korean free games are not that bad after all 9well flyff is, but WOKF is actually turning out to be a decent game lol)

The problem with dungeon runners is that it just kinda sets you loose in this whole new game world with no real directive, no storyline, nothing. If you can find your way through that theirs some very imbalanced PvP you can take part in - not to mention the fact that P2P players get much better gear and weapons than those who don't. But it is fun every once in a while just to load up and slaughter shit.
The other free game that NCSoft put out, Exteel, is pretty entertaining. It's like an online gundam fps but it does get old pretty fast, and most of the players are absolutely TERRIBLE.
