Ahhh... so you're not talking about the 1990 four-time Oscar nominated Barry Levinson film, Avalon.

This one isn't bad either if you like animation/anime
Its called tekkonkinkreet, I am not really sure when is the time setting in the film, looks like in the future.
and I found some pictures for to look at, the drawing is madly good!
I've seen Casshern, its pretty cool! Thought the story was a little too draggy/long, the outfits and styling are top notch!
I love Shaolin Soccer, have you watch Kung Fu Hustle and king of crockery [食神] as well?

Birds and Vertigo would be a good start.
I just finished watching Avalon. Its interesting, very Matrix-y with a Cypher ending(rather then a Neo ending). I don't get what's up with the dog though.

I was watching Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy the other night and I really think that is one of my favorite openings at all time. Partly because of how cool it is, partly because I would never expected that kind of opening.

I saw Before Night Falls last night. I liked the 'newsreel' cinematography and a lot of the camera work. It was nice to see Johnny Depp's and Sean Penn's cameos, but all in all I was disappointed. The problem for me was in the screen story and direction (the writer-director hyphenate). Nothing developed... it was all suddenly 'in your face,' very self-indugent and there was no pathos. Bardem's performance was disappointing... a bit over the top... and I strongly suspect that was more about the director than about him. After watching the film, I am not the least bit inspired to further explore the author whose life is chronicled or his works, and that's not at all like me.

I liked a lot about it. The cinematography was breathtaking as you said. I just thought telling the story from the narcissistic POV of Reinaldo Arenas was self-indulgent, one-sided... and riddled with holes. I discussed it today with the friend who recommended the very beautiful "The Sea Inside," and he liked "Before Night Falls" as well. He saw the pretentiousness but didn't let it distract from his enjoyment of the film. However, when I said I might watch another Julian Schnabel film or two he advised against it saying he gets more and more pretentious with each film and "Before Night Falls" was only his second film.

Wah! did not know Javier has another movie, looks pretty promising from the reviews on imdb, Thanks Lakatz, I am going to look for the sea inside for my next viewing pleasure!
BTW, can someone tell me what / why or how, is Lost in Translation a good movie? I don't get it at all.

It's about culture gaps and what also unites us beyond these gaps (there's another excellent illustration in Babel). I've studied Japanese 3 years, plus have been an anime fan, and I can tell you that there's really is a culture gap and you don't realise until you live and travel in various parts of the world.
Cypher: most faithfull adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story, not worth Blade Runner but really good.

Ive read a lot of P.K.Dick and Cypher fails to ring a bell...care to remind me from which short or novel this is from?
on the same note i always though Screamers was a pretty good adaptation (Second Variety), eagerly awaiting the sequel to it as well (damn if they made a series of that whole alternate P.K.Dick universe i would be ecstatic).
edit: and what the hell did they do to "The Golden Man" (i think the short is called that)...NEXT had no resemblance at all to it =/
I can understand for things like I Robot or Minority Report and the adaptation works for they bring US into the novelists mindscape and display (with varying degrees of success granted) their vision even if the story changes. For NEXT it was just "hey lets take this idea and remove it from its context"....ending up with a pile of steaming crap.
and while i swing wildly off topic ill add that SF stories like I robot etc (golden age) are really not about the tech. they are about social interaction in strange situations permitted via...the foreseeable unknown.

I meant to say "most faithfull adaptation of a Philipp K Dick-esque story" but my tongue slipped (actually, the scenario clearly points at bits and pieces of Dick stories, ). Almost all his ideas have been deformed and denatured (see Blade Runner, the very short story Do android dream of electric sheep? is very, very different), but Cypher gets this "nutty" ambiance so unique in Dick's universe, plus the scenario is very clever (it took me 2 viewing to fully understand it, or so I believe). The moment relative to "the lift" (I won't say more so that you can be a little bit surprised ) is typical of his non-sense in action. If you want to be convinced by a trailer (though you'll be more surprised if you don't see it, there are spoilers about the story), here it is:

Will check it! I didn't watch Next as it seemed a dumbed down version, on the other hand I was pleasantly surprised by Paycheck. Minority Report was cool because of the HCI stuff (which was designed by real HCI people).
EDIT: forgot to mention the tv series "Total recall 2070", watch it (I first saw it on France's Canal+) it's worth the penies they've put into it (but you'll feel sad watching the last episode, realising there's nothing after this nice cliffhanger...)
