Lol, our grammar, mostly our whole language is based on German. I've heard that it's easier to learn than some languages from some people and harder to learn from others.
Guess it's all about how your brain works. I don't know.

Yep, Greek and Latin are the other languages you're thinking of. I assume by "viking," you mean Norse? Perhaps?
When I said our grammar, I meant English. It's a Germanic language. With a lot of other things thrown in too.

not to get into the grammar discussion.....but I have studied german and the grammar is not like english (they put the verb at the end of the sentence and mangle it....english grammar is closer to -of the languages I have studied- french in the respect of how the sentences are put together.....subject, verb etc.....though I am NOT an expert on the subject of comparative linguistics......though it would be an interesting field to study....)...while the history of our words can be from the germanic area I would have to say that the sentence structure and such went more romantic than germanic....
anyone want to have a discussion about the history of languages???????????

Sentence structure as far as direct objects and adjectives is more like German than French. AFAIK, German can be translated almost literally without having to switch words in the sentence around. Not so with French.
I've studied more French than German though, so most of this is my observation.

yeah but german puts the verb at the end of the sentence so that you have something like:
I to work with my friend go
in french it would be:
I went to work with my friend (as it is in english)...
japanese does the same thing as german...the verb is at the end so its easy to find...in english and other romance languages the verb can be almost anywhere in the sentence (though there is usually an order to things...but---)
so that is why I say english is more like the romance languages than the germanic ones....though verbs are much easier to locate in the germanic ones!!
either way we have to look back farther than german or french to get where we got to today---and that is latin which I have never studied so ............

True about verbs.
I guess I'm thinking more of the connective words too. French seems to have more, especially ones involving tense.
English is basically a Romance language. It depends on who you ask, but it still decends directly from Romance languages, so there you go.
I almost thought about becoming a linguist, but then I realized I didn't want to go to school forever just to make an average amount of money. But that was most things I thought about doing.

This is what I meant:

the later Norman occupation led to the grafting onto that Germanic core of a more elaborate layer of words from the Romance branch of the European languages.

Horseshoes and hand grenades here. They're closely related, but English is not a romance language. I'm not feeling very direct today. Or remembering correctly. Go figure, I'm at work.
I had that same page open too. Lol.

lol... I know modern English is influenced heavily from French and Native American words (adaptations or their wording, anyhow).

Yeah, we basically borrow words instead of think up new words. It's kinda funny. That's why English has the largest "vocabulary" of any language.
Don't the Germans just cram words together when they need new words? Thought I say something about that...

gee we decide to have an intellectual discussion and then people decide not to read it.....
yes german has a tendency to just put old words together to make new ones (cant think of one now but an example for computer would be something like mechanicdeviseforprocessinginformation....and yes the japanese do some of that as well though recently they have decided to just take the foreign words and use them jap-anized....ando....)....english just says ok, we can use that sure....
now pwnd and azzer can get back to their beers....
