I actually don't go down to Chicago much. Last time I went there was to see my grandpa in the hospital at Northwestern in November.

Chicago just has good shopping, aka if you are a guy, no real reason to go unless you are browsing for some hot women.

It is a big town with a ton of buildings. The mafia is from a LONG time ago. Their isn't anything remotely like it used to be there anymore. Their are still gangs but no "mafias"

Oh, and avoid office Dave at all costs. He'll borrow money and not pay it back.
And enjoy paying taxes.
|
Ya know we DO pay taxes here in the USA as well (am doing my fed and state taxes this week, ugh)...so no news there...undead not a problem...
And I generally avoid people named Dave anyways.
And I just read that Chicago is going to raise taxes to the highest level of a city tax in the USA...yeppo, we have taxes in the USA (and not quite sure HOW they are going to get the olympic bid with that bad rep....) and didnt the train system/metra just miss being put out of commission altogether because they mis-handled the budget/made a huge deficit???? Why would you want to go there????

I know they pay taxes in the US!
I just thought they weren't as much as Provincial Sales Tax plus, Goods and Services Tax.
OMG, I just found out it's now down to 13%. Yaaaah.
Not sure how high it can get in the US.

wellllllll....quick tax break for ya non-americans.
If you work you will pay at least 3 of the following (maybe more depending on where you live)
FICA--medicare
FICA--social security
federal taxes
and possible state taxes.
fica comes to about 9% of your paycheck, fed is a sliding scale from nothing to a whopping 28%....
so when I look at my hubbys check...he gets about 60% of what they say they pay him---the government takes the rest....now at tax time you make sure that you have paid the right amount for your gross earnings so you either owe or get a refund...or come out pretty close.
now this doesnt include city, county or other local taxes that some poor slobs also have to pay---
so if you earn lets say 50k a year after the government takes its share you will get about 30k of it. give or take a little based again on state and other local taxes (this does NOT include that pox we call insurance---that is another whole ball of sewage I shant go near this evening.)
and THEN if you buy stuff there is state, city, county and other taxes on goods......the tax I was referring to (Chicago city tax on goods I believe) is at like 9% and they are going to hike it to 10.25 if I remember the news correctly---thats a lot of tax! (think New York city also has 10% but dont remember correctly, I hate big cities and just get to hear all the Chicago news cause lots of friends live there).
SOOOO tell me about taxes in canada! (and any other americans feel free to correct me if I have erred---though after working in HR for a few years I find that this was the trend).

Wow that looks complicated.
In France they take taxes directly on your paycheck. These taxes are used to fund the retired people paycheck and to fund the social security (maybe there's other taxes).
Social security is : when go you see a doctor (or you have a surgery or anything along those lines) you only pay 10% (or even less) of the bill, the rest of the bill is paid by the state.
I think it works like that, we started studying it in social economics class, so if I'm wrong don't hesitate to correct me ^^.

I was just talking about the taxes when buying something from a store.
Edit: If I bought something as simple as just a coffee mug, I pay an extra 13% tax.
I think it's too much.
