Cannot believe nobody mentioned Homeworld! That's still got to be the best RTS, it was the first RTS to offer COMPLETELY free 3d movement with your ships. On top of this it's story is amazingly deep, Relic needs to make it freeware so everyone can experience such a masterpiece game. The multiplayer is also a blast, I'm not sure if people still play, but I wouldn't be surprised if they still do.
Starsiege Tribes: Really dated graphics, but people still play it all the time on their crazy ass custom maps. Some of my best gaming moments came from this game, shooting someone with a rocket launcher then watch them fly off 40 miles away. It's free, but you will likely have a hard time finding the correct patches to play on some servers.
If you do decide to play Homeworld I'll warn you that you will probably get really angry at some points in the game, this isn't your traditional RTS. You really have to think at times and take care of your units because they get carried over from mission to mission.
All of the Half-Life games. Valve is full of so much win, anything made by them is pretty much guaranteed to give you a good time.

Along with other games already mentioned:
Raving Rabbids 1/2 with friends
Bloons
Portal- Probably one of the best games of all time hands down. Only downside is that its way too short.

BG2, Neverwinter Nights, Worms, and Team Fortress 2 are the only games that haven't come from my childhood that have given me that good ole' feeling of "whoa".
Favorite series of all time, though? Doom. I got hooked to it through Final Doom, and still play custom .wads to this day. I've yet to find a weapon as satisfying as the db shottie.

Half Life series, TF2, L4D, and Resistance 1 and 2 for modern games.
For semi older games, Red Alert 2, C&C Tiberium Sun, Starcraft, and Diablo 2.
For really old games, Oregon Trail, Doom, Ms Pacman, and Centipede come to mind.
