When you are reading a book or watching a show or movie, do you prefer them to have happy endings or sad endings?

I just finished watching a show with a sad ending the other night and hated it. Not so much because it was particularly good or bad (not that great overall TBH) but because the ending was such a downer.

So I definately prefer happy endings.

Depends on book/movie/show. A sad ending can be decent in the right movie/show/book (like I am Legend) but a happy ending where the main person/party pulls through can be good too.

Oh... we were talking about books and movies? Nvm...

Some movies I like to have a sad ending, changes things up. Pretty nice and some should be that way.

More chick flicks should be sad at the end.

Just like you wish there was a happy ending for Dom and Maria in Gears of War 2? I personally came closer to shedding a tear at that part then any chick flick out there.

The type of ending doesn't matter as long as it's well-done. Crisis Core was a predictably sad ending but the various nuances of how they made it end created something that you really wouldn't regret playing towards. Some "sad" endings just blow though, like X-men 3's ending. I felt completely ripped off when I saw that. Depends entirely on execution.

I always enjoy watching a movie with an unexpected ending that is sad or the enemy wins. I was most shocked when watching 'The Mist' which had the most uncalled for endings and i was thoroughly pleased by it. Everyone I ask says it was the worst ending ever but when a movie doesn't end the predictable way its nice!

I have one:

In ~50-100 years, everyone you know, including yourself, will be dead.

And in 500k years Earth itself will be too hot for anything to live. 70'C at night/150'C at day is more than enough to kill off everything and vaporate water.

When it comes to me, I prefer happy endings. Because usually, sad endings make everything pointless. I still don't understand, why Gilgamesh ended this way.

The only sad ending I liked was The Dark Knight's one.

As long as it's good I don't care if it's good or bad. But I prefer happy a bit more.

I always ask the massage therapist for a Happy Ending.

I just seen the first InuYasha movie.

It's a bit of both after the credits, InuYasha eats dirt and Kagome is enraged because he disrespected her cooking!

Depends on the movie or book really....if it's a good movie or book I like whatever ending it happens to have. If it's a crap film I generally like happy simply because if I at least end it feeling good I don't feel like i've wasted too much of my precious time.

Honestly though, most brilliant films and books tend to have less than happy endings...but it's the way the less than happy is presented that makes it good. Film-wise I'm thinking 'Life is Beautiful'; certainly not a happy ending, but presented in such a hopeful way that it wasn't exactly 'sad'. Book-wise I'm thinking 'Pride and Prejudice'; it ends happily for Lizzie and Darcy, but read between the lines and you learn that Lydia and Wickham are living miserably, constantly in debt, and with a marriage that is a complete failure.
