Offensive or not? You decide.
So, yes I realize the general ideal of the fact that if you have to ask yourself whether or not something is offensive it generally means that yes, it is.
But... I didn't consider it offensive until someone said that they were going to report me for it, and that's when it struck me that it may be rather offensive for someone who is a hardcore religious fanatic.
But this is basically what happened, it's an ongoing joke that I've been harassing people with since proph launch, random guy adds self to party, i talk to him about it, someone is recruiting for a guild and makes it sound like a cult, they get harassed with it, it's a very applicable thing..and this is how it generally pans out:
*random guy adds self to party.. I say "hey, you're looking to do {insert mission of closest availability to current location}" They say "yeah" and then I ask them "well, first before we go, have you heard about our lord and savior balthazar?" generally they leave right then thinking I'm trying to form a video game cult, and we have a little chuckle on our ventrilo amongst guildies/allies. for the ones that play along i generally go on to saying something about how "balthazar saves you know, but thats mostly because he shops at his local wal mart." and then I go on to say that "Balthazar cleanses the unholy," and whatever other religious puns i can conjure at a time. and usually by then they nixx out thinking that I'm being serious.
But in this particular case, this guy continued to play along with it, until i said something along the lines of "you know, they say balthazar was sent to us by another world, and that sirens forewarned his mother of what was to come, then in an instance he said let there be light, and clicked on his bedroom light switch, and then, there was tyria" At which point in time the guy informs me that I'm an asshole, a sinner and that I probably (in much less nice words than I'm using) fornicate with my mother whilst my sister is lined up and ready to catch my ammo, and told me that he was reporting me.....yes, reporting me.

Maybe offensive to people who are members of a cult. Seems like it's in good fun to me. If anything you might be able to report the guy.

Not at all offensive, religious people just get mad when you point out how stupid their beliefs are.

If he's telling you to fournicate with your mother and sister, i would have serious doubts about his religious beliefs.

Don't act suprised, it's just a matter of time before someone takes you serious. It's a fact that there's a percentage of the population who are so indoctrinated into their dogmatic religion that they can't seperate jest and parody from having their faith threatened.
If you want to see your act taken to a much larger setting, watch Bill Maher's 'Religilous', it just went to DVD.

I don't see how it's offensive unless the person somehow took it the wrong way, and didn't understand it was an attempt at humor. You had me chuckling so I don't get how someone would be angry about it. I think the guy in question needs to take a chill pill, never let your anger get the best of you, it turns you into a slobbering animal.
Really fenix? You, a mod, doing that which a mod is supposed to prevent? Wow.

Pretty sure I haven't done anything that mods are 'supposed to prevent', so I don't know what you're going on about.

Flaming is the act of posting messages that are deliberately hostile and insulting. A troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages intended to cause a disruption in discourse and to provoke other members into hostility.
?
To the OP: very strange way to get fun in an online game...

I wasn't flaming, I was simply stating that religious people (in GW in this instance) get angry when you point out the blatant flaws that make their religion look silly.

This is totally different from saying:

This thread is full of generalisation and tbh you're not going to have people of differing opinions here. Only people who think like you will contribute to this thread, because anyone with a little bit of faith will feel that it's going to be series of a flame. You have an opinion, and I utterly disagree with it, but I'm not thinking your opinion is stupid. It's almost as if the "over-religious" is here mirrored by "over-anti-religious" if you see what I mean. In a different atmosphere, you'd have a sincere discussion on the matter, but it seems that you have to make fun of religion in this thread. And I don't see the fun in this (exactly like I don't get the fun the OP is getting at behaving like this).

The only organizations (religious or governmental) that I see as a farce are those that cannot handle having some fun made of them, you see, people tend to take themselves too seriously only when they are trying to reassure themselves that they are right even though they know they are wrong and the rest of the world is telling them so as well. And the same goes for organizations as well as people.
I mean for gods sakes, I could be a true and devout believer in the flying spaghetti monster and be mildly offended by the fact that people see it as a insane notion, but even if I'm mildly offended I'm not going to be so arrogant as to attempt to correct someone on their "wrong doings" and put them on the "right path" like so many real religions do, and that's the failings of such organizations... Unless you can allow some sort of word play to be made about it, then you're expressing a personal subconscious insecurity with it that shows that deep down you question it yourselves.
And as for fenix's so called trolling, hell it's my thread if it's considered trolling I'd like to encourage it, because even if it offended the balls off of me (which it didn't) I have respect for actions made by people that encourage others to question their own perceptions of reality and to think about what's really going on, because truthfully, no one starts to question themselves until someone says something derogatory towards them, then it kindof inspires the thought to think why it is that a few people on the outside have that view of them and can be good when applied as constructive criticism.

Offensive? Yes.
Should you care? No, not really. Stable people should be able to deal with jokes. And laugh with (or at) you.

This is not about taking yourself too seriously, this is about making fun of others. You're free to make fun of yourself in whichever way you see fit, but at the point where you make fun of general stuff (like religion, but it could be anything) you're no longer in "your" world, but the world of everyone, including you and others.
You can make fun of your beliefs if you want, but stop thinking that you're only talking about you. This is where generalisation comes in. If you talk "religion" you're talking about a lot of people. If you're talking about your beliefs, this is your problem.

I don't think you understand me, my beliefs or my situation, but this is off-topic and I'm not going to talk about that, in particular on Guru. I'm more "serious" (less joking about myself) than you are, it's a matter of beliefs, because I've come about enough sadness, depression, poverty, despair, death, loss, etc. in my life to want something a bit more than personal pleasure in a "basic" sense of it (let's laugh of anything, humour has no limit).
(I'm not saying I had more of these experiences than you, I'm trying to explain where I come from)

question their own perceptions of reality and to think about what's really going on

You're completely right and I'm in the same camp here: my role in this thread is to question your perception.
Making fun is not a "constructive criticism" in any way or shape. This is (in passing) what bully believe (and I'm not saying you're one!) and they're plain wrong. If you want to have a constructive discussion here, there should be people of faith, and they're not going to come here because of the tone of the OP and the following posts, because from the get-go this is a "look at the kind of fun I'm making of religious beliefs" kind of thread. I know I'm going to be one-against-all here and possibly attacked for my beliefs, that says a lot about how much "constructivism" we can achieve here.

ON TOPIC: Yes, something like that is offensive to a lot of people. But is it offensive to me? I'd probably get all serious and tell you that you're worshiping the wrong god, and that you actually should be worshiping a goddess--Lyssa specifically. ^_^;
Read: No, I wouldn't take offense at it.
