My Favorite Comic Book Story Was...
...probably all the way back to the 60's. No Im not that damn old, but when I was a lil kid in the hospital getting my tonsils snipped I got one of those huge comics that reprinted this story among others.
Fantastic Four #25-26 - the first REAL fight between the Hulk and the Thing.
Please understand I collected comics for 25 years, HAD 21 comic boxes with plasticed and backboard protected keepers. Ive read them all from Cerebus, to Hellblazer to Sandman, Thor, X-Men, Spidey, even the Alan Moore run on Swamp Thing and....well you get the point.
Why this old story? Since youd have to spend a couple grand to read them Ill just tell you. Ill skip to the juicy part as The Hulk is on a rampage in New York City. Everyones away, and the FF get called in. Back then the Hulk spoke like a brutish type, and had not yet got to the braindeaded "Hulk Smash!" phase.
They try to reason with Hulk, but Hulk laughs and wades into them. Johnny Storm throws fire, but Hulk does the big hand clap extinguishing him where he falls a great distance unconscious. Reed stetches himself to where he ties up Hulk, but Hulk grabs Mr Fantastic and starts doing a taffy machine impersonation with his body. The Thing got smacked 2 blocks away, and Sue Storm puts an invisible bubble around Hulks head to where he cant breathe.
Hulk brings his big foot down on the ground stunning her and hundreds o normal citizens in New York. Then he goes to smash her and the rest, but she, and her KOd hubby and brother are protected in her force field which Hulk whales away on over and over again.
The Thing arrives, and the bored Hulk just leaves. The next scene you see a weakened Sue Storm at the bedside of Johhny and Reed in the hospital. (Back then they played up the damsel angle with her alot). They aint wakin up, the Avengers are out of town, and they can hear Hulks rampage still going on from the hosp room. The Thing knows hes walking into an asskicking, and starts making his way back to the green goliath alone.
Today we'd call it camp, but back then it was a pure exhilerating set up. The police have the area Hulks in blocked off, and suddenly they all part cause The Thing is coming thru. Hulk sees Thing and laughs, and The Thing goes at him. Ben Grimm calling upon his youth in the Yancy Street Gangstarts streetfighting Hulk! HILARIOUS! Hulk has sand thrown in his eyes, and then gets his jaw jacked. Hulk smacks Thing to another part of town where he leaps after him.
Between FF #25-26 just the fight between these two takes up an entire comic. They even clobber each other into the harbor where Thing jumps in a boat looking for Hulk. Great scene as when Thing is looking from left to right for Hulk you see this huge green fist emerge from the water waiting for the boat to hit it. It does, and and they start pounding each other underwater.
Somehow I remember they get back up on land still plowing away, and all of New Yorks watching their fight on TV. The Yancy Street Gang feeling allegiance to their old member drives a truck into the Hulk even! It was just an overall awesome told story of a hero that wouldnt go down, and by the time it ended they were on a skyskraper. The Avengers finally arrive, and I forgot exactly how it ended, but remember it wasnt a big throwdown as much as Hulk just turned back into puny Banner.
Of all the great stories Ive read this is the best cause all the elements were in place. I was a little kid, the whole marvel universe was young, and even by todays standards Ive yet to see a fight handled with such well paced drama, humor, depth, and afterward not feel ripped off in the least.
Whats your fav comic story?

Good pick. George Perez is one of the best artists ever. Always felt the Flashs' death held more impact than Supergirls myself.

Barry is back and as fast as ever, he came back during the final crisis i think. I rarely pick up a comic these days, only get hardcover now and again. I actually rather like the Infinite crisis story as well. Superboy is one helluva bad guy.
Oh Jumping, i bet you can't wait for the blackest night then?

^ yeah i guess that's why DC has been killing off their heroes left and right for the past few years. Just so they can filled up the Zobbie Lantern Corp. Wonder if they'll bring back bruce wayne as well.
