If you mean anime/manga is mostly read/wateched by kids and teenegers i agree, but saying that there isnt any of it only for adults is pure retarded.

And i am not saying it because some of them have violence, blood and gore...

When I was younger I watched Gundam and DBZ on TV.
Last Anime related stuff I saw was Death Note and Code Geass (first season). Death Note was good but Code Geass was kind of meh, not quite my style.
Also, subbed, not dubbed, thx- all dubs suck.

Dubbed is better because I like some of the american voice actresses' voices and I can understand what they are saying.

Best I've seen/been seeing was subbed One piece, because I couldn't distinguish fillers from normal eps.

heres my list.... http://myanimelist.net/animelist/PowerRAV
it's taken some time to rack up that much anime watched when you consider a full season of a anime takes is average 13-24 episodes or so with each episode ~20 mins or so to watch, and I don't fast forward or skip episodes if I'm gonna watch a anime I'm gonna watch it from start to finish.

My quote actually answered your question or "of what I mean".

12 kingdoms is also pretty mature if you get a chance to see it. It starts out based in a high school (almost can't avoid that) but quickly turns into something more. The main character also has some inner conflicts that she has to work out as the story progresses.

I have no seen Cromartie High school, so I cannot put an opinion towards it. I have no doubt that they're some anime that break away from main stream stuff, but those are far and between. I have stayed away from the anime for a while now, I do read some manga and played some visual novels from time to time. I have heard a lot of 12 kingdoms and I might see one day, but it reminds me of a lot Visions of Escaflowne.

I have no doubt that DBZ was targeted toward young teens, what themes exist in the show are different things, not completely, but they are different. If you watch unedited versions of the show, you'd find that there are more adult themes, it's sexual, violent, and there's a lot of death, although they fluff it out with the whole being wished back deal. This is not to say there are some teen themes involved, but it's largely more adult themed than Naruto, I'd say.
Just because kids are the main characters in the story, does not automatically make it directed at kids. Even some cartoons in the U.S. have children main characters in adult themed shows. Plus, Japanese culture is what it is, not saying this in any mean way, but different things are acceptable there than they are here and vice versa.
It's unfortunate that you can't get past this, there are really good stories that are told and are quite engaging. Ghost in the Shell has a quite unique premise and Neon Genesis (which I keep putting off watching) apparently gets real intricate if you can get through the main characters whining in the beginning.
Elfen Lied is awesome...the girl gets quartered! It has a good story to boot and they cover a lot of ground in just 13 episodes.
I have no comment on the con mentality, people will do what they do, I won't change that. People dress up and go to the Star Trek conventions, but no one will argue that that is directed at kids and teens exclusively
|
The themes you referred too, is of course mostly towards the common teenager. The is to say, adults can relate towards the themes but you should accept that the focus of these themes and ideas that stem from what the common high school student is interested in.
The unedited version of DBZ isn't for adults, its for teenagers with a touch of spice to it in terms of graphics and content. In the end, its just a selling tool to sell more towards the youth demographic of its products. You should see where the DBZ (unedited) version advertising, and who is common consumer of DBZ products, but it always is directed to TEENAGERS.
You are right it doesn't automatically make it towards kids, but if a large majority of animes has a common protagonist that is a teenager and high school student, who the hell is the large demographic of which the company is trying to sell too? Adults?! Please use some common sense.
Your point on Japanese Culture is pointless because all of you have said its different, however hasn't said anything relevant towards your argument, or mine for that matter.
I can get past it, and I do while I have enjoyed many animes. But, like you and many people here in this thread cant get past the idea that anime is mostly for teenagers and kids.
I have seen some parts of Ghost in the Shell, but you should refer to either the movie, manga or TV series. All three medias have different themes, messages and ways of presenting the story. Uhm, the point of NGE?
You haven't said anything into why Elfen Lied is good other than the story. But for god sakes, a lot more goes into an anime other than just the screenplay.
I have originally didn't want to waste the energy into responding, however now that I have, I think mostly because I was bored from reading uni stuff all night. But nevertheless I am moving on, there is not point in this anymore.
