Essential 70s Rock
Hey!
I've been listening to a few songs on my iTunes that sound really 70s. Kasabian's Fast Fuse, Wolfmother and also genuinely 70s stuff like The Kinks, Jefferson Starship and Cream.
So I want to get into a bit of 70s stuff, but as you can imagine I have no idea where to start...
So any idea what I should try listening to, taking in mind I like the above mentioned kinds of music...
Any help would be appreciated.

you must remember that a good portion of those on this forum werent even alive back then (and they might think its old folks type music)...
led zeppelin was good, wings, not sure if you would like stuff like commodores or billy joel, or earth, wind and fire.....(might be more on the 'soft' rock end of the world now)....kiss was around towards the end of the decade with some ok stuff (and some bad ones too). billy idol had a good one (yeah maybe)...elton john....david bowie .....
I was still listening to the beatles (had no choice...sister liked them and it was her radio)...so I didnt get to listen to much else until the end of the decade when disco hit
but you can always do a search for top 10 songs from the '70s...etc

Cream is awesome, glad you are listening to them. As mentioned above, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin will stand the test of time for centuries.
Bowie is a good recommendation, I like the Grateful Dead from the 1970's (that was their best decade by far). I'd throw in Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa. And I'd command you that you must listen to James Brown (debatable that it's rock, but The Godfather of Soul is just this important).
edit: while I never really got to be a big fan of them, I appreciate Rush quite a bit.

You are getting your 70's confused with the 80's. Billy Idol's first album (self-titled) was released in 1982, GNR's first album Appetite for Destruction was 1987 (you are wayyyy off here), Van Halen barely cracked the 70's but is much more known for their 80's singles, Twisted Sister's first album was 1982 but only got famous from their MTV videos (and they are a novelty act AT BEST, though Dee Snider is interesting when he's just being himself).
Edit: anyway, 2 other bands that were HUGE in the 70's that haven't been mentioned yet (and that I'm not a fan of but still they were great) are The Who and The Rolling Stones.

True, but they still have the 70s vibe to them imo, so he'd probably like 'em. (Also yeah, Twisted Sister isn't really the best or anything but they have a couple of good songs. You could do far far worse.)

Appreciation has nothing to do with the period of time something was conceived.

Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Doors, Cream, ZZ Top, Jethro Tull, Queen, The Beatles, Animals, DIO, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Janis Joplin, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix.
That's what just came in mind.. Some of them were active in the 60's and even 70's(Sabbath, well heaven in Hell, are still active) but you got a list there. You should get a good idea out of all of them. The bold ones are my personal favorite

Quoted for truth, except that I personally don't like Rush . But, as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

Creedence Clearwater Revival
I know they started in the 60s, but were still around in the early 70s. My favorite all-time band.

What is considered 70's music does include groups from the late 60's. It is not really an exact timeline but more of a overlaping of the period. Let me add one more The BeeGee's
