I play pool often with my friends at the local bar. I don't claim to be an expert (far from it, actually), but putting spin on the ball isn't terribly hard, you just have to compensate for it when hitting. For example, if you are using left hand english, you'll want to aim a bit more to the right than you normally would - I find that if I don't, the act of putting left hand spin on it makes it go a bit further to the left than I intend. Then again, this could just be because I'm not hitting it correctly lol.
It's a really fun game, but takes loads of practice. Keep it up because if you get good enough you can win some decent money in tourneys.
Anyone else have tips? I could use some, too.

I used to play billiards a lot when I was younger and worked as a bartender.
(I played the original billiards game: 5 wooden sticks in the middle of the table, six pockets, 2 white balls and a red cue ball)
I rarely play these days,- but I was fairly good back then.

Some general tips:
Don't line up your shot more than once. Chances are you had it right the first time.
Work on your english (sidespin), follow (topspin), & draw (backspin) to control where the cue ball will end up after your shot. This separates the men from the boys.
Chalk up after every shot, even if it makes your friends think you suffer from OCD.
Finally, play against people more drunk than you are. If they don't make you look good, time to call it a night.

- If you're in it to impress girls or earn money/free beers.
If you are in it to get better,- play sober people who are better than you!
Take some time to play alone from time to time. This will allow you to practice the shots you would normally avoid when keeping score.
