Ok, so I need some help. Theres a game (well, a few actually, but this one in particular) on the SNES that I really really want to play on PC. I know people do this, but I'm not 100% sure I understand it. Heres what I think I know: I need a SNES to PC emulator, as well as the game file; and the emulator will allow me to run any SNES game files I have.

First off: Is this correct?
Second: Can anyone refer me to any websites where I can download a good emulator (that doesn't have any bugs/viruses/bad things and that is free)?
Third: Same as #2 but for game files.
Fourth: Can anyone explain what files I should be looking for (the extensions like .rom, etc, for both the game file and the emulator)?
Fifth: Can anyone explain exactly what to do when I've downloaded both of these files? Is it just a matter of running the emulator and picking a game or do I have to do some other steps?

I tried to do this myself but failed. I wasn't really sure what to do (as you might have noticed), so I have no idea what went wrong and deleted everything I downloaded (I'd rather go with a website recommended by someone here rather than a link from a link from wikipedia or something like that).

Any help would be very much appreciated, I'd really love to play this game again. Thanks in advance.

I got this running a few years ago (a SNES emulator), and it was really difficult. I'm afraid I can't be of much help with the specifics, but it was fairly difficult (at least for me) to do. The emulator software wasn't that hard to find, but there are files you plug in, I believe they are the games themselves, that are difficult to find, as they are the actual illegal part of it. Also finding English instructions written by someone with half a brain, about how to get them all running, is yet another hurdle.

As you say, finding things that actually work, wading through the dead ends, hoping you aren't picking up viruses or trojans, are the perils. I am not sure it's really worth it. I got the original Zelda and Gauntlet running. Nostalgia is great and all until you realize games sucked back then, from today's perspective.

Hopefully someone here can actually cut through all the mess and make it straight forward, or perhaps can host the files themselves with a FAQ/readme. But blindly charging into the internet doing this is very difficult.

Actually I found a game file. Don't know if you meant 'a game file that works' or just a game file in general. I just googled it and it came up, so I don't think finding one will be much of a problem (unless they're the ones that are really buggy). Also, I actually own this game on SNES (own one of those too

), but I'd much rather play it on PC, for quite a few reasons.

Also, it's not nostalgia thats got me going. It's the fact that it's simply the best game I've ever played in my entire life. It's better than BG2 and Neverwinter Nights, and seeing as I've been playing those sorts of things my entire life that means a lot.

I never said it was an RPG, and it isn't. The actual name it 'Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrels', but since the first game was only released in some parts of Europe, most of the cartriges simply say 'Lufia', like mine does.

EDIT: Oops. It is an RPG, though it's not Dungeons and Dragons based like BG2 and NWN.

Before it gets closed, here's where I got backups of the vast majority of my games. They have what you were originally looking for, as well as Lufia & the Fortress of Doom if you have it.

Quality > quantity. Some of the best RPG's to this day are SNES.
