All my friends are awesome people. People in my circle of acquaintances who are not awesome are not my friends either.
Thus I hereby infer that I choose friends based on level of awesomeness.

Anyone else have their brain melt when reading the OP?
Usually getting friends.... (Real good friends) Requires you to venture outside of your house. Have fun with it.

No longer trying to. Ever since my best friend got drunk on my sister's wedding and I was embarrased to be her friend. Yeah, it was a she.
I do like some people, but only when they don't come to me to bitch or whine about their problems or borrow money... you know, basically being a douchebag. Applies to both genders.

Pretty much this, however, when deciding who I'm going to sit next to in a class full of strangers, I will make that decision based on their physical appearance.

I have the same thing. I get along better with females than males unless I am really good friends with the guy. Otherwise I have an easier time making friends with girls. Example: This year in physics I was in a study group, I knew 3 girls going into it but we soon added 2 more girls that became friends of mine during the class. oO Basically study group was me plus 5 girls.

Common interests is the main thing how people connect, but people are correct when they say "friends just happen". But if physical appearance is a deciding factor of whom you're going to be friends with, that's extremely shallow. I would very much like a intelligent and fun conversation with an ugly person than with someone who is pretty/handsome and boring.

physical appearance has little to do with whom I pick to be friends --since I was the one that people had the issues with for the most part.
It was more common interests, in college sci-fi was very popular as was rpg and board games....lots of my friends are from those 2 groups (almost exclusively)...and most of them wound up in the fraternity I joined (yes a WOMAN in a fraternity GASP-it was open to all).
Afterwards the few I still call friends were mostly co-workers (one of them is old enough to be my mom )....and then other interest groups. (like stieff or sushi)...
(and thanks for the empathy--where were you all about 35 years ago??)

I had ONE friend as a kid, and I still call her from time to time, am her sons godmother etc.
High school was just as bad, though for different religious reasons....no friends there

My biggest issue these days is being totally social inept...
I really don't have friends...it might come from my idea that people are idiots until proven otherwise...
In college before I got kicked out I had some friends but lost contact after I suddenly disappeared from school...
These days the only time I leave the house is for work and school (until recently just got kicked out of my second one however I'm gonna fight this one...I really got stop getting into trouble...) so I don't even know where to begin to get freinds in Real life...
On the inter webs...yeah about the same...occasionally I meet a nice person (my ex for example I met on guild wars...) it usually doesn't turn out to well in the long run (my ex for example...) I tend to keep friends for awhile but things happen (fights(not to common), they quit playing(people quitting gw? never would have guessed), ect.)

Conversation is also a big factor. Me and my friends always have something to talk about.
I don't really care about physical appearance for the simple fact that it can change. And a douchebag can have many different appearances xD.

Same, I have a lot more female friends than male friends.
As for friends on the internet, well, like cosy said, they are more good acquaintances. I don't spend enough time on the internet to develop a good friendship. And on GW most people I like stopped playing the game.

Must be sarcastic/able to withstand a lot of (usually bad) sarcasm. Couldn't give a RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO about looks/popularity. I do slightly care about how they would smell though.

If by hidden agenda you mean getting an A in physics? You betcha! If you don't, I will remind you I have had a gf for almost 3 years now. No hidden agendas, just find myself more comfortable with being able to strike up a conversation with a girl.
