Atreyu- The Band
Right, I've been a fan of the rock band Atreyu for about a year, and loved their albums straight from the start. I guess anyone who has been a fan if Atreyu might see where this is going. Basically I really wanted to get together with a few mates and go see them live. I thought I'd watch 1 YouTube video to just see how good they were live. I wasn't expecting for them to be as pitch-perfect as their albums, but boy was I in for a shock.
Alex's superb scream initially gave me a good feeling about their live performance. The singing however, was frankly a little shocking. I was determined to believe this video must have been one of theor off days; I tried another one, but found it to be just the same. As were the other ones I tried.
Basically, I want to know whether it's worth still going to see them, if anyone has any thoughts on the matter, please share them; I really need something to take my mind off things for a while.
Also, is it actually true that Alex (the lead vocalist) is tone deaf?

Perhaps the sound quality in the live videos is just bad. It depends who took them. A lot of the time you find they're taken by people near the back with crap cameras. Don't make a decision purely on YouTube. I've never heard of this band (though I'm listening to some now), but I'd say if you're seriously thinking of going, then go. After all, they won't be around forever, and you don't want to find out they're breaking up and be really disappointed you never saw them. Besides, if they do end up sucking, all you've wasted is one night and a bit of cash. It's not like you haven't wasted that in any other circumstance.

Youtube video's rarely if ever make live performances sound good, being there sounds completely different unless it's a professional recording.
As previous poster, just go and find out yourself. Gigs don't cost much and you're unlikely to massively notice the RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOups they make playing live.

I saw Opeth, Arch Enemy and Metallica live in the last couple of years, all of whom were amazing live. So are their live youtube videos.

Thanks guys for the advice so far. Just like to get an opinion from someone who's been to see them live. Also, you kinda have to watch one of the youtube vids to grasp the scale at which they are off-key
Here's the link to one of their best songs, in which their singing sounds a little weary:

Oh lawd, that sounds pretty terrible. Drummer should sing, 'singer' should not.

Becoming the Bull is invariably at the end of their set. They've gone through a significant length of full-on performance before coming to this song. They're likely tired, and still exerting themselves through the song. Every line in that video is sang by the member of the band who sings it on the album recording, and it actually doesn't sound too bad considering it's their final song of the set. Yeah he's off-key..that's why his forte is screaming, not singing. I commend them for this new shift in sound, to get him to sing a little more...but he's got some voice coaching left before he sounds perfect. His album singing is autotuned, albeit slightly.
I'm also not surprised to see that your favorite song is their most pop-conscious radio-friendly track to date. So much for being a fan from the start, eh?
Anyway...the reason for seeing a band live is to SEE the band, not just hear their studio-massaged tracks with multiple takes and re-takes. You should be glad they actually work to perform their songs the best they can...most bands have backing tracks and voice-correction software filters on the mics during their live shows. Arch Enemy is an example. I love the band, Angela is a scream goddess, but she uses smoothers and filters on her mic when singing live.

Oh absolutely. My ears almost fell off after I heard the lead singer. The drummer is clearly a much better singer.

I've saw them live before, didn't think they were anything special. If you're a fan of them because of Lead Sails, Paper Anchors, I might just laugh. Listen to there original stuff, Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, and The Curse. The Curse was the album that got me into them to begin with, it REALLY went all to hell with Lead Sails though.

I think the drunks that sometimes sing on weekends at 2am have better singing abilities than this guy.

Personally I would rather listen to the lead singer. And I know many Atreyu fans like myself that agree. I don't care for the drummers voice at all.
Except for Tool, I haven't seen any really good live bands.

How drunk were you when you watched the youtube video? Don't think just go - alcohol + atmosphere + cool people + metal girls makes a huge difference to enjoyment.

Becoming the Bull is FAR from their best song. I can't imagine their set being so terrible that it would be the highlight of the concert. What the hell is wrong with you people?
