Default Which Newish Game is More Like GW1 than GW2

I have played GW2 and am disapointed that it is more like AION and WoW than GW1 in gameplay.

GW1 is still nice and playable but looking forward is there another game out there that is more like GW1 in gameplay?

to be honest none, GW1 was in a genre of it own. GW1 has a unique gameplay, was a completely new MMO.

Agreed with all of the above: They really missed a trick by abandoning GW1 and trying to join the MMO highway with GW2.

Why they didn't evolve Guild Wars with expansions and addons was a lost opportunity. They should have kept the feel of the original and just kept bolting on new challenges and chapters.

Never mind, I'm going to finish off the Hall and enjoy these last days of GW. Might even create a character in pre and spend the dying days where it all started and come full circle - a fitting tribute to a truly great and original game.

I'm looking forward to Blade and Soul. It's not at all like Guild Wars, but at least it doesn't try to be a heavily watered down generic game. It is suppose to have a really amazing combat system that feels a lot like a fighting game.

Can't think of any game like Guild Wars. Hopefully Guild Wars 3 will be like the new Counter-Strike where it goes back to being like the original, but with more and better everything.

I didn't pick up GW2 because I was afraid it might be dumbed-down and missing the elements that made GW great. So I wanted to wait and see. It makes me sad to see threads like this that make it sound like that fear may have been well-placed.

Anywho, I don't think there's a "true spiritual successor to GW" out there right now. I'm probably going to be migrating to Torchlight 2, which looks like a really, really promising D2-like game.

Like everybody said, no matter how much you search, there's nothing similar at all. That's why GW always had such a success, cause unique.
It's really sad not having anything comparable and having to either replay always the same things or play games I'll never be happy about but eh...I do both

Chton,
I don't think you should base yout opinion on threads like these. There are a lot of ex-gw1 players who really like gw2 and find it a good successor. However GW2 isn't just a graphical upgraded version of GW1, but it has different gameplay and therefor feels like a totally different game. Even though Anet warned us bout it, there are people who didn't realise this to the fullest and are dissapointed or, they did realise but doesn't like the directions.

GW1 was/is a game that is unique and very good, but the lements you like, might not be the elements I liked. So to give you a good answer to your underlaying question I would like to know what elements made gw great for you?

I like 80-90% of GW2, there are some minor gameplay aspects I find irritating, but with a bit of finetuning that can be changed and are not game-fun breaking for me (the downed status is not what I expected of it cause its just a near form of death instead of a near form of alive). I liked the calm of the Tyria landscape however and I'm pleasaantly surprised that they maintained that not only in the starter area's but also further on. The shiverpeaks are as stunning as Eye of the North promised and Ascalon is slowly recovering from the seering and restoring to it's old pre-seering state (besides the dragonbrand that is stunning in its destruction, but not in a postseering ascalonian way but in a realm of torment kind of way). The lore in the game is great and just those two elements where what I was hoping for.

In the end reading a gw1 forum with mostly reactions of dissapointed people is the wrong place to decide if GW2 is your game. Either watch the game on youtube or wait for a trial or take a deep plunge and buy it.

I personally don't think your reply really addresses Chthon's issues with GW2 very well.

I've been hoping for a substitute for GW as well but no one seems to know of any already done or in the works. The issue for people like us is that GW was the sweet spot for certain players that have no interest in moving on to a game like GW2 because it was never going to be the game we wanted to play. No matter who plays up the positives about GW2, it's never going to have the same dual classes and fully instanced gameplay. People will try to convince you that what's done is better for the game but what they're not getting that it's an opinon based off of their preferences and not fact.

Just because GW2 is a MMORPG, unlike GW1, it does not means it's a generic, watered down game. I think many people went for GW1 because they wanted a good, free-to-play MMO experience. They didn't get a MMO exactly, but now they will for the sequel.

None.

After they made GW, they broke the mold.

They made a new, "more complex yet simpler" mold, and that's GW2. How did they make a game out of an oxymoron? Don't ask me!

A game is only its rules.
Rules don't make a game necessarily better or worse. As liking or not the rules of a game it's just a matter of taste.

So it's not like the game (that is to say, its rules) is better, but that the rules fit better the model they wanted.

Something easy to learn, less about green, and easier to balance and maintain, yet with a skill ceiling high enough to allow competition.

Why are there games like Titan Quest or Guild Wars that allow two classes? Because one class on its own can't do what they can do with two.
In GW2, you don't need a second class, as each class can perform several roles. Even thieves, the less 'supportey' class of all, has things like Shadow Refuge.

And in Lore, the second class was something only the Chosen could do. As the purpose of chosen was dealing with Abaddon, once Abaddon has been deal with, there's no more Chosen being born.

Bro, have you checked out Path of Exile? I've tried both and IMO PoE is far superior.

Hell, each class can preform almost every role, to the point of ridiculousness. Anet is half-way to going ME3-ending style with every class using the same damage/healing/buff skills but with different colors to suit their profession.

The Secret World. Mainly because you can mix and match skills from any skill trees you desire from different "professions" just as you could in GW1. Currently playing that, over playing with pandas or any monstrous Aion/Rift hybrid like GW2.

MithranArkanere I'm not sure you understood what I was saying. I'm stating that arguing over the differences and benefits between GW and GW2 is going to be solely based off of preference. Telling a person that only one class is better then two or vice versa is a preference and not a fact. Instance vs persistant? A preference. The choice of what class a players chooses to use? Preference. And so on.

People can argue points till they're blue in the face and neither will win because it's their opnion and preference veresus someone elses.

You have some factual errors there as well. In GW you don't need a second class, you just have the option to use one. I mainly play using one class and I rarely use any other skills other then my mains skill list and it works out fantastic for me for both pve in pvp. However, I do enjoy mixing it up at times because I like to bring along a pet so I take a ranger secondary.

You do need a second class.

Let's, say, for example, that you are a warrior, and want to lose conditions (or hexes in GW1).

In GW1, you'll HAVE to either bring secondary profession skills, or depend on your allies for that. You'll have to turn yourself into a ranger or necromancer, for just conditions, or monk, ritualist or even dervishe, if you want to remove conditions and hexes from yourself.
That is a 'gap' in their skill set.

In GW2, you can also depend on your allies, but you can also bring skills like mending, shake it off, signet of stamina, and even traits like Shrug it off.

You don't need secondary profession skills to fill gaps like that, because there's no gaps.

In both cases, it's intentional, and it fits the intended design and its purpose, but that doesn't change the fact that the gaps are there.

I think you're still missing the point. You don't need a second class because yeah, others will be there to help you out. Heros, henches or players. Gw and GW2 aren't single player games. They can' be but they're not built to be.

But this gets off track as to what I was saying in regards to preference and opinion.

Diablo 2 is more similar to GW1 than GW2, and in itself, is unique in its own way.

Do check out path of exile. Its one of the finest Diablo 2 clones around, and has a much more mature, darker and horrific atmosphere than Torchlight which just looks like WoW.

Its only in closed beta atm but you can pre purchase early beta access and you get cash store points equal to your payment (only $10 for the beta key plus that values worth of cash store points).

The developers are very serious about having vanity items only in the cash store for PoE too, you won't even see half of the kind of junk that the GW2 cash store is full off. Atm its just extra character slots and storage tabs, and later on they will just have mini pets, costumes and probably make overs, just like in GW1.

It will be a FTP when launched, with an open beta from around December, but right now its $10 for closed beta access. Personally I started out with paying $10 for the beta key, and enjoyed the game enough to pay more for the $25 kiwi pet pack. They let you upgrade the pre purchase support packs if you want to, higher donations just get you more points, a shinier pet, and other collectable goodies.

I agree 100% Im hoping GW2 fails and everyone starts to come back before GW1 ends and Anet sees the light and continues GW1 with expansions and addons, You can see my start time in Guru and my start time in GW1 was almost 1yr prior with the beta, Ive never lost my love of the game and wish GW2 fails. I hate I cant click to move around in GW2, hate hate hate. I hope that GW2 is a failed experiment gone wrong.
