Part of me wishes I had kept my 94 Camry. But it was becoming more of a money pit than it was worth. And it was only 2 doors and my wife wanted us to move up to a 4 door...

there are good reasons to get a newer car...I loved my old 84 crx, but it too, was a money pit and only 2 doors (and only 2 seats ). so getting a newer car was a must...my escort was just losing money for me so getting rid of it was in my best interest (it devalued 1/3 its first year...by year 3 it was almost worthless even though it had less than 5000 miles on it!) So good reasons.

That is how we looked at the old Camry. It was a great car but sadly, was not becoming worth it to maintain. Now we have to try to maintain our newer cars. Which is always fun...

yeah, I remember when it was 'just change the oil every 3-5 thousand miles' was the total maintenance package....and changing the oil was something a good man could do .......sadly that is not the case anylonger. ---though still almost with my 2 cars, think my crx was the last car that a home mechanic could take care of, now you need the fancy computerized craap do change almost anything on a car! ah the good ole days

It is definitely harder to change the oil now, but I still try to do it myself when I can. Haven't done the Altima's yet but the Civic's I can do. A lot of the rest of it I have to take to an actual mechanic though since it is usually above me. Oh and then there are the computers. You HAVE to take them to the dealer when it is an issue with the cars computer...

...and it almost ALL the time is computer related so yeah, just about everything (now including an oil change) has to be done by professionals

And then the professionals find something else wrong with it! Took the car in today to have the cruise control looked at and the oil changed. Turns out they didn't properly adjust the brake switch (this was at a dealer) when they replaced it. So it kept reading as the brake being pressed so it put it in failsafe mode. Then of course they found that we have an intake gasket and an oil pump gasket leaking. And carbon build up. All together, another $1250 in repairs...I just dropped $1250 6 months ago and now this... Definitely NOT happy at the moment.

shouldnt they pay to fix the brake issue since it was their fault? (yeah, I know rose glasses here)....Sorry to hear, cars used to be cheap to upkeep, now its like having a kid, guess thats why my hubby says everyone is leasing now instead of buying...

I believe they did actually. They were the ones that messed that up so I don't think they are charging me for it. Leasing is nice but having to pay a car payment every month sucks. At least one of the cars is paid off and the other one is almost paid off. While expensive repairs they were necessary to avoid even more expensive repairs, aka the engine seizing up... Still doesn't make me happy to drop that much money on repairs twice in 6 months.

well, still....sorry to hear about it...I was in a similar situation not too long ago as well, so I know how it feels....think I dropped about the same amount on our repairs.
Not a fan of leasing because in the end you wind up owning nothing...at least if you buy you can (try) to keep the car for years after you have paid off the loan. ( I think 20+ years is what the life of a car should be ...if not longer!)

Short rant: They didn't even fix what I initially took it in for! They said they did and nope. The adjusted the brake switch and said that is what was causing the cruise to go into fail safe but when my wife took it in today, fail safed on here again. So now not only does the cruise NOT work, but if you even look at the brake pedal funny you almost go through the windshield... So now I get to wait for the guy to call me back so I can explain that their "fix" didn't fix it and that they need to readjust the brake switch again so just hovering above the pedal doesn't slam on the brakes... Grrrrrrrrrrr... Took it in to get 1 thing fixed, ended up getting over a grand worth of work done only to find out the problem I wanted fixed, wasn't!
Ya leasing is like renting, and even if you lease to own I think you still end up paying more because their is no wiggle room. At least you can wheel and deal when buying. Doesn't work that way with leasing I don't think.

sorry to hear about your experience (sounds like my brake issue from a few years back---that one took me 10 tries to get fixed! and yeah, in the end it never really was fixed, though my corolla got new front and back brakes out of it).
and it seems that if you ask anyone to do more than one thing, they are incapable of doing it. (had that happen twice already this year).

Mananamah???????
Indeed, it isn't cool. I called in yesterday and the guy told me to call first thing this morning and a tech would go out with me so I could show him what was happening. So I did. A minute after they open. Apparently they already had 10 cars in line. So I waited. Called back 30 minutes later. Still no. So now I left a voice mail. It has been an hour and a half. Nothing. FFS... Yes, I'm on summer break, but I have already given up my morning run to do this and possibly now my morning walk... Grrrrrrrr

welcome to the 'burbs of chicago, sorry to say (those cars were probably there over night and were just being checked in ....)
as for missing your run...I think the heat may have already gotten to high for that by the time you got up (here it was ....welcome to the dog days of summer...wishing for a nice pool right about now---).
I would go for your walk and then call them back. (dont wait for them, they might never call).

I don't know if they were there overnight or not, but it turned out the guy wasn't even in. I actually got it in this afternoon and dealt with a different guy. Guy was nice, might have liked him better actually than the first guy. I went on a drive with one of their techs and of course the issue never occurred. But I was able to tell the tech what was going on and found out that the guy from Tuesday left out vital information that I had told him. So it turns out that when the engine coolant gets a bit warmer than the car likes, it causes cruise to go into fail safe... Nissan actually sent out a memo about it. So nothing wrong with the car, just apparently too hot for cruise. Though at some point I should probably have the system flushed and re-filled. Might help.
It is definitely hot out now, that is for sure. It was 70 when I got up at 5:30, so I could have done it. Oh well. I did get a bit of a walk in at least.

sounds nasty...hope things work out for you.
so today had to wait for the fedex person ....so I got up early to take my shower, (had a doctor appointment at 2:30)...waited, waited.....had to leave at 2:20 to get there in time...guess what time the fedex people showed up? yes 2:30! ARGH! (and no fedex was not my choice of carrier, but its coming from canada and I guess there might be a postal strike going on there so the merchant sent it by fedex instead of the post).

As long as it isn't damaging the car then its just an inconvenience. Just will keep an eye on it.
Seems like that is how the operate. Or they don't even knock and leave just a note saying this missed you. Or the ding dong ditch. So by the time you get to the door they are gone.
