I have to disagree with the judges here, they all said the same thing about Ao Kanashimi's shot saying it was too large.

I think it actually brings alot too the shot. She was trying to tell a story just like the music video and it worked well. I think it would be less appealing if there were less steps.

Or maybe alot of people are really finicky with large pictures. Just because you have to scroll a little doesnt make the picture bad

/edit sorry I made alot of typos

Loved the pictures. Even if I don't know more than half of said stars. I thought it was very creative.

Tidus, a real shame you got kicked out before this part, as I'm sure you'd have kicked posterior. Oh, well. One day I'll actually find a contest you're in while it's going on, so I can root for you properly.

I umm.. definately have to disagree with the judges this week. I'm being blunt about this, and take in mind its an objective opinion, not anger.

Well first off they definately need to watch the u+ur hand video again and pay attention to 2:28. There's no "party" there, just two people arguing with pink leaving. I wasn't trying to capture a "party scene" if I wanted that, I would've done a shot for Get This Party Started. This excludes Judge 3 who is knowledgable of body language. Kudos.

And also i definately disagree with the cropping issue with Ao's shot. I just don't understand how you can falsely lead someone to take a marvelous shot and then deduct points because they were following the assignment in capturing their star. I understand her shot completely and the cropping doesn't phase me one bit. Seem's asinine to me.

If this affects my scoring, then so be it. Someone had to say something as these judges need to get their policies straightened out.

On another note: I loveeddd your shot and story Scarlet. If you're not the winner, I honestly can say I'd be surprised. :] Trust me, I'm more than expecting to be gone this week. =)

My write up:
You know who you are
High fivin, talking sh-t, but you're going home alone arentcha?

Cause I'm not here for your entertainment
No
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight

For my armor, I threw together a wild combo, because well, in Pink's various music videos, she has some pretty eccentric outifts and I thought that I should project this onto my shot. Also, for the location, I chose a secluded area in the Great Temple of Balthazar to portray how in the "U+Ur Hand" video she was arguing with some guy. The rest of the portrait should be self-explanatory, given the lyrics pretty much say everything. =)

Em.. on a lighter note lol, I've been talking to some people about maybe having a get together sometime this weekend so we can all meet up ingame and have some banter! It's been done with other contests to good success.

Would you guys (be you competitors, fans, judges, minipet etc) be up for that sometime if a time and date was arranged?

Hey guys! Sorry about the delay, waiting on one judge's decision and can't seem to get ahold of her. Sent her some PM's, so...yeah. hehe

I'll definately see what's up this weekend, this sounds like lots of fun! Great shots all around everyone, I truly loved going through them. hehehe I promise to get those results to you ASAP!

No rush Tender. A little extra waiting time means a little extra time to make another addition to the wardrobe or scout out potential locations for future photoshoots, so it's all good

wow its crazy how you've all improved so much from week one. The difference is very noticeable!!

Nymph's and Renders were my favs this week - mainly cos I didnt need a picture to know who they were trying to be I've never even heard of Dues's person - but it sounds like you got it spot on too!

Since all three judges agreed on their critiques about the cropping of this photo, and there were more than one person who mentioned their concern about how it was judged, I will try to further explain a little bit more so that it is better understood.

Firstly, let me start by saying that after the last round of assignments, we all really did take a good hard look at how we were judging and made a number of changes.. we also posted a little 'guide' to the assignments so that you would know exactly what we were looking for. Saying that we are being 'asinine' for making note of something in our critiques that we clearly mentioned we would be watching for is unfair. I personally felt that the judges had a MUCH better week this week considering how difficult it was with all the outstanding work that there was to go over.

All of the judges felt that Ao's photo had too much negative space because of the vastness of the staircase she was running down. We suggested moving up towards the top so that, with a closer crop, the stairs would not be so overwhelming but also so that she also did not lose the background that we all felt went well with the portion of the video that she was trying to portray.

Anyway, I hope this helps for those who made mention that the felt Ao's photo was not judged fairly.

I agree, having her at the base of the stairs helps make her seem more as if she is running...you wouldn't get that feel of motion if she was up high...

Yes, I agree with that Geishe you've given some great advice in the past

Something that I've mentioned in my little cropping guide:

"...I learned cropping was vital in making a picture win or fail...cropping is also influenced by taste and preference so learn what your judges prefer I have a habit of loving to keep my character the "star" of the pic but you may very well find an assignment where you must consider other things to be the focus like an assignment..."

I think it's great that AiSolana is making that clear...when it gets down to it, good cropping has gray areas that aren't necessarily right or wrong and the debate of appeal and artistic taste come into play...I think that is what has launched such a discussion what I think is great is that I reaaally doubt this is gonna break Ao into the "up for elimination" category cuz she had a good shot and next week is a whole new ball game

What an original assignment!! I loved the shots you guys came up with, the improvement is amazing. I would certainly not want to be in the judges shoes.
Good luck to all!!

@ Tydus... I was really sad to see you go. You had some great shots.

Default Assignment #3 results

Here they are! After much discussing, we have the results for assignment #3!

Scores:
Deus Toutatis: 8+8+8=24 (up for immunity)
Render Me Useless: 7+7+7=21 (up for immunity)
Scarlet Renoux: 6+4+6=16
Ember Coals: 6+5+4=15
Ao Kanashimi: 5+4+3=12
Corrupt Rosary: 2+2+5=9 (up for elimination)
Nymphalis Antiopa: 3+1+2(+3)=9 (up for elimination)
Gracie Grumple: 1+3+1=5 (up for elimination)

Immunity:
Deus Toutatis: We felt you nailed this assignment right on the button this week! You seem to improve each time. Perfect connection between you and the video.
Render Me Useless: Up for immunity again! We felt that even if we didn't know who you were supposed to be portraying, we still could have guessed because you did such a great job. Very creative this time around!

This was a very tough one, as you both did great. But we felt one was just a little better, so...here is this week's most wanted!

Immunity

Congratulations! You can choose one of the following:

An in-game prize of one passage scroll to Urgoz's Warren

OR

Automatic immunity for next week (no matter how well you do, you can't be voted out. This doesn't mean you'll actually win next week though, and because sometimes people take advantage of this prize, it could cost you points for the following assignment. )

We have 3 people up for elmination this week based on a tie! But only one will be voted out.

Elimination:
Nymphalis Antiopa: Seems to be a pattern here - last week's winner is up for elimination the following week. Your shot was okay but we felt that cropping and focusing on just your character could have used some work. We know you can do better than this!
Corrupt Rosary: Good job portraying the video, but first you didn't follow the rules of including your helper's name, plus we really didn't see the connection in the background, even with the video. We just felt it could have been done a little better. And looking at past performances, we wonder if you'll get any better.
Gracie Grumple: Up for immunity last week, elimination this week. Your assignment felt somewhat rushed, and you weren't the main focus of the shot and we couldn't see your face. After last week's outstanding shot, we were expecting more from you.

This was a tough choice, but after much deliberation, one of you sadly has to go.

Eliminatee

Assignment 4 will be posted right after this post, since we're behind. Have fun!

Default Assignment #4: Opposites Attract

It's time to get personal! This week, we want to see love and romance portrayed. But we don't want just your typical love scene. This time, it must stick with the old saying that opposites attract.

However, you MUST take this shot with one other person. Henchmen and heroes are not allowed. Also, you MUST include the name of your model with your submission. And please, use the opposite gender of your character for this assignment.

In addition, please include a little story/dialog of how you and your special one met, explain what's going in the photo, and explain what could happen in the future. This can be in story format, a simple dialog, or just a simple answer that cuts right to the chase. However, it won't affect the scoring! As with the first assignment (which also had a little writing to it, explaining what was going on), only the picture is what really counts. The second assignment was the only exception.

You will be judged on how well your angle is with your partner, how well you worked with your partner (such as timing of emotes), romantic environment, colors, etc. You can choose the opposite you'd like to portray, and here are some ideas:

Luxon/Kurzick
Rich/poor
Good/evil
Jade Brotherhood/Am Fah
Shining Blade/White Mantle

You can portray either of them, but we should be able to tell which one you are and which one your partner is (like if you're Luxon or Kurzick, etc.). Also, it may even help to contact some of the other contestants and see what they're doing so we have a variety (instead of like 7 Luxon/Kurzick ones, etc.). But that's only an idea.

This assignment is due no later than Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 12am PST (2am CST). To send it, you can PM it to me here on Guru, or send it to one of the following emails (but just in case, it might be helpful to let me know you sent it there so I won't forget to check it).
[email protected]
[email protected]

You guessed it, the rules:
  • No editing (other than cropping), modding, PhotoShop, etc.
  • Please send a cropped and uncropped version of your picture
  • No headgear
  • Include the name of your model in your shot
