Default Ascalonian fascination with the macabre?

Hey all. I made another Pre-searing character the other day, and after having been away for so long it struck me as odd that quite a bit of the Ascalonian architecture was covered with horrific imagery. Most notably in the catacombs (where they fit in) but look around if you get a chance. You see it a lot in Post-searing too in the ruins. Leering skulls, open-mouthed faces, etc. What do y'all make of this? What little we see of Adelbern, Rurik and the rest gives no indication that they would have such a fascination with the macabre...

Well the Catacombs has that sort of imagery because its a burial area and has been so for for along time and was probally made by early Ascalons, Its not different that looking at the gargolyes and such like that are build on older churchs.

There isnt really anywhere else in pre-ascalon that has these kind of things, that ive noticed. And i cant say ive noticed any imagery in post searing :S

Well the same architecture is in the RoF. Unless a bunch of Ascalonians discovered the RoF and carved them, I doubt it.

Catacombs: Probably part of the design just due to it being a sad and dark place. Doesn't mean Ascalon has to be full of weirdos.

Ring of Fire: I don't think these were carved by anything human. Aside from the gargoyle faces, there are freakish faces (you can find some in Ember Light Camp above a pool of lava) with horrific expressions on their face. I think these are the embodiments of those who met gruesome ends in the Ring of Fire, and now their souls continue to scream and writhe in agony within the very rock itself. The gargoyle heads may have a similar purpose, or to represent the pure evil and misery of the place.

Well in real history, gargoyles and other scary thigngs were carved to ward of evil spirits and devils. I'm guessing that it is superstition.

I'l had a bit more to the "real history"

Gargoyles on castle and Cathedrals and such are named s because of the sound the make when water goes out there mouth. Their essentialy very nice gutters.

Oh, additional note - there's a spot in the catacombs of pre-sear that has the magma-skeleton faces from ring of fire. I thought that was interesting...

Sophitia, imagery is all over, even in Ascalon proper! =D Huge groaning man-faces are predominant (check out the bridges in the northlands), but if you pay attention you'll see the fanged skulls and other things amongst the ruins too.

Could be more of a religious thing.
ie; As a scarecrow scares away the birds, the imagery is to rid the villagers of evil spirits that could dwell within that land area.
More of a superstitious thing, but people used to believe things like that a long time ago, and some may still do today.
