Hedge Wizard?
After finally completing the Garden of Seborhin quests, I must ask: what is a Hedge Wizard? I've seen the term used in several other RPGs, but I've never been able to find a clear definition.

In fantasy literature, a hedge wizard or hedge magician is a wizard of low ability, generally self-taught or with a low education background as opposed to the common examples of being apprenticed to a mentor or studying though a structured educational system.

Technically, a Hedge Wizard or Witch is a person who uses the various forms of low magic (herbs, roots, etc.). For example, they would attempt healing through natural means instead of trying to invoke a spirit for a cure.
EDIT: Nice, gift3d! Beat me to it!

Besides being a low level wizard, they seem to always fail in fantasy writing when they attempt to be a hero.
For various and funny reasons most of the time.

Typically, though, 'hedge wizard' is used as a term of derision, while the Hedge Wizards in teh Garden of Seborhin seem to have it as a job description. Possibly it's a little more literal - they're wizards at working with plants, including hedges? (It is supposed to be one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, after all.)

A hedge wizard is obviously a wizard that is so untalented he is forced to pay his way by doing gardening work for people.

I'd side with draxynnic on this one.
It is supposed to be one of the most beautiful gardens in the world, after all.
EDIT: actually after looking some pages on the wiki, hedge wizard seem to be the classic definition. I think they use more normal words for their wizard. From plain old gardener to Horticulturist.(does that exist btw?)
