What is this a picture of?
Out in Old Ascalon, many old buildings have this image on them. What is the significance of it?

At first I thought it might be the skull of a Forgotten, but the eye sockets are to the front of the skull, not the side.

Its just a general engraving on the wall. It doesnt hold much significance and is never mentioned.
OT: Though that image caused a stir once when someone photoshopped it onto a shield creating the infamous "Terrorweb Shield" hoax.

I also see it charr shaped, although...double horns??? Maybe it's just a random scary picture?
But really not Grenth for me, he's usually a more repetitive look and his skull is lot more triangular (ovine I'd say).

I'd say it is a charr leader. I think this because of the larger char w/ double horns(more horns means greater exp in wisdom and fighting?). And the 2 smaller skulls on the bottom signifiying the subordinates of death? That's at least what i get out of it.

Gonna go with Charr. Remember that much of Ascalon (particularly the areas near/North of the Wall) used to be Charr territory.

I doubt there's any significance. But for those who say "it's definably a charr" or along those lines:
Firstly, this is Ascalon. Why would Ascalonians have images of their enemy throughout their kingdom as decoration? That makes little sense.
Secondly, these very images can also be seen in the Underworld (along with a lot of structures in the Depths and Ascalon), so why would an image of a charr be in the Underworld?

Its a charr used to scare children and show them the fearfulness of their enemies.

Considering its on human gate, it could be a warning sign.

Yeah if it was a charr skull, I'd assume it would be to warn the charr, or be a bit of propoganda against the Charr.
These images are in Pockmark flats, in the ruins:

Is there any indication what lay out there pre-searing? ie, what those are the ruins of?

wow, been a long time since I was in pre-sear, but wasn't there an estate out past Reagents? It was as far east as you could go, and there was an entrance to the catacombs out that way. I don't remember the structures being that big though. We may not have had access out that far in the pre-sear map. I do remember quite a few water ways (irrigation ditches? with bridges that we crossed, and there are such bridges out in Pockmark. Of course now they are dry beds if they aren't filled in tar.
Five years ago when I was in pre-sear, there was no legendary defender title, so many of us never journeyed much beyond the wall to the north, so no telling how "open" things were to explore. At least not for this old timer ranger.

You're thinking of the Barradin Estate in Green Hills County, but that is to the west, not to the east. We can't explore any further east than Ft. Ranik in Pre, and we can't get to the western part of Green Hills (the buildings and catacombs entrance) in Post. The Hammer Gate (used in Post to enter the Breach) is in Green Hills, but it is blocked by some boulders in Pre.
North of the Wall, we can explore north about as far as Piken Square. We can get a small part of the Breach to the east of Piken, but not as far as the Hammer Gate. To the west, we can explore the southern half of the area used for the Great Northern Wall mission.

This was the skin used on the fake "terror shield" back a while ago before textmod was in common use.

As far as the significance in-game, I think it's just like a gargoyle or another creepy object to decorate buildings.
