Default Every Species Ever

Well, this forum is about as lively as you'd expect, given the imminence of the release of Guild Wars 2, but I can hardly posit a question dealing very explicitly with GW1 on the GW2 forums...

I'm trying to make a list of every species or race found in Prophecies ever, with the exception of charmable animals, and including species found only as mounts ridden by enemies (like dolyaks). Some creature types from the game data, like plants, I've split up into multiple types (pods, stalkers, and treants, in the case of plants) because of how radically different specific kinds are from one another. I can't seem to find any such list on any of the wikis, so this is the list I've constructed from memory so far:

Behemoths, centaurs, charr, devourers, dolyaks, dredge, drakes, dryders, dwarves, elementals, enchanted armor, ettins, forgotten, gargoyles, ghosts, giants, grawl, humans, hydras, imps, jade constructs, minotaurs, mursaat, pods, scarabs, seers, skale, snow beasts, spiders, stalkers, storm riders, tengu, titans, treants, undead, worms, and wurms.

Am I missing anything?

Plants are plants irregardless of how they look - well, that's my opinion. Though I guess sylvari make a good counter-argument. But I wouldn't call anything we see as "treants" (oakhearts, I bet you're referring to - in which their race would be "oakheart" though there's also the pinesoul version, and perhaps more - perhaps pinesouls are considered a different species of plants, just as technically "tree" or "flower" isn't a species of plant) - ranting cut short, the word "treants" is never used in GW.

Anyways:
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Species

Such a list that you're looking for, ignoring charmable animals. A list on here, incomplete due to not listing all the kinds of "super species" (100% made up terminology ftw):
  • Asura
  • Behemoth
  • Centaur
  • Charr
  • Cobalt
  • Demon
  • Destroyer (well, kinda)
  • Devourer
  • Dolyak
  • Dragon
  • Drake
  • Dredge
  • Dryder
  • Dwarf
  • Ettin
  • Fleshreaver (unknown, actually - they're made out to be a species, but could be a kind of undead)
  • Forgotten
  • Giant
  • Giganticus Lupicus (extinct, ofc)
  • Grawl
  • Griffon
  • Harpy
  • Human
  • Hydra
  • Hylek/Heket (are they the same species? Mechanically yes, but in lore they're called "cousins" so it depends on how close you consider "same" to be)
  • Imp
  • Jotun
  • Krait
  • Kraken
  • Leviathan (a kind of fish - there's more kinds of fish out there)
  • Mantid
  • Minotaur
  • Mursaat
  • Naga
  • Norn
  • Ooze
  • Seer
  • Skale
  • Skelk
  • Snow beast
  • Tengu
  • Wurm (side note: Worms are shown in GW2 to be young wurms).
  • Yeti

"Super Species" (aka anything that mechanically is the same but in lore is a grouping of multiple species):
  • "Beast"
  • Demon (maybe - if so, could possibly include dryders and imps)
  • Dinosaur (though only raptors seem to have remained in GW2...)
  • Fish" (would contain leviathans)
  • Insect" (would contain Mantids, and scarabs ofc)
  • Giganticus Lupicus (my personal speculation!)
  • Plants

Unknown situation
  • Wardens

I would not count the following of those you count as "species" - elementals (they are non-living beings), enchanted (again, non-living beings), ghosts (they're the dead forms of multiple species - we see human ghosts, charr ghosts, dwarf ghosts, griffon ghosts, and centaur ghosts at least in GW1), jade constructs (again, non-living), titans (non-living), and undead (they're dead!).

Similarly, Nightmares (or as Tehbaldi calls them, azure) are spirits and such are not a species - similarly for skeletons as mentioned by Olle... Same would go for druids (they're former humans).

The important thing for what I'm working on is tracking significant physical differences between different types of creature, hence why plants were split up into multiple groups given impromptu names since they are never given a proper name in-game besides "plants" and referring to them by a specific species actually makes less sense. Oakhearts, redwood shepherds, pinesouls, and etc. appear to be different varieties of the same basic creature, so referring to them all as oakhearts would make about as much sense as calling all humans "Canthans," which would be confusing even if we didn't have the word "human."

I abandoned the wiki's species list when I found it to be terribly unreliable, particularly with regards to wildlife. Scarabs, spiders, riders/storm kin, any variety of plants (including just "plants"), etc. etc. It also has no constructs listed, which I'm not sure is another omission or just the result of the intent of the list being to track only living beings, since any constructed being does not technically count as a species at all, even if it is sapient. That's fine for some purposes, but not mine.

The species list and category are WiP's with me being the only contributor and I got other things to work on. The "meta species" are all in the category, but not in the article for instance (well, I don't know why scarabs, spiders, and riders are not on the article - I probably just overlooked them on accident).

Constructs were an intentional omission because they are not a species. They are as much of a species as any electronic toy for kids - they are not flesh and blood, they have no dna, etc. etc. The species list was meant to be a purely lorical listing (which is why "Beast" "Insect" and the like don't make it on there - and there are no articles, nor need for such articles, for individual species within those "meta species") and leaves the non-species to the creature type or affiliation lists which are mechanical.

Mind saying what your purpose is? Perhaps I, or others, could be more helpful in furthering your list.

I'm certain you could, but I'm loathe to reveal projects I'm working on until they could be considered at least a reasonably complete alpha. I tend to abandon projects halfway through and don't want to build up any hype (even very local hype) for them if I'm not going to end up completing them. Just look at how long it took me to finish the lore summary over on the GW2 forums, and that was much shorter than what I'm working on now.

On the other hand, that summary clocks in at less than 6,000 words when finished, and the project I'm working on right now is coming close to 20,000, and I am less than halfway done. Most likely less than a fourth of the way done! I'm so unlikely to actually get a decent prototype-level stage of completion before I need some community input to keep the steam going that I'm basically going to have to unveil it in the half-filled in outline stage at some point, I'm just not sure when.

A couple you're missing: harpy and mandragor.

EDIT: And since you added humans you might wanna add norn and asura.

With a bit of research on taxonomy and clades, actually, you could probably come up with non-made-up terminology.

Although if you do that, you'll find out that most things that get referred to as "species" are probably more accurately a genus - so for riders, for instance, "storm rider", "wind rider" and so on are probably species of the "Rider" genus. Some might even be families - if we move to Cantha, for instance, I don't think turtle dragons are close enough related to Saltsprays to be in the same genus. Heck, when push comes to shove, turtle dragons are probably no closer related to saltsprays than Tyrian drakes.

I'd comment on missing kirin and gaki from the list, except that what Maldeus is looking for is apparently a list of Prophecies creatures.

How, precisely, is this confirmed? Can we actually rule out the worms you see in Pre-Searing Ascalon being a different species with a resemblance to larval wurms? It strikes me as fairly unlikely that a huge swarm of young wurms would show up in Ascalon so far away from any normal wurm population.

In Plains of Ashford (I think Queensdale too), you see what were called worms in GW1 with a very (aka almost the same) appearance but they're called wurm hatchlings - the non hatchlings are typical wurm size.

Furthermore, there's the larval wurms you mentioned and there's also the April Fools quest which is obviously in of itself not canon but holds canon-inducing aspects (e.g., the Guild Wars themselves), and in the second one there are the worms and adult forms - which are wurms.

As to "showing up far away from normal wurm population" - remember that we don't see much of Ascalon in pre-Searing and gods know what the Searing did to the inhabitants (the wurms could have gone underground and remained underground because of that, as they *did* survive as we see them in GW2).

Then there's also the complete lack of worms in GW2.

I've decided to stop being coy about things and throw up an actual thread concerning the project this thread was made for, if anyone's curious as to what it was.
