I am a little confounded by this mission i suppose if someone gives me a hint i will feel like an idiot for not seeing the obvious but here goes.

Ok i start this mission it tells me to sneak out and defeat the charr besieging the academy...ok fine..so i attack the waves as they come in..pretty soon no more waves. But it doesnt update..so i wander around in the zone killing every charr i can find...still no update...also.

I now have this string of lost soliders and what not following me around and when i talk with them they just tell me to lead on...lead on to where? I go back to Rurik from time to time..he just yells at me says i am wasting time blah blah blah.

How can i get this quest to update so i can rendevous with Rurik and move forward?

And whats the deal with the lost puppies wandering thru the zone with me?

I probably am missing something here ...well obviously i am or i wouldnt be asking.

Someone help please

You are on the right track - look up on the sides of the cliffs to see if you've missed any charr. Once the right ones are killed, the academy doors *should* open and Rurik will come through - it's worked for me even when there were still some charr about.

You're supposed to ambush them. Don't open the front gate with the lever and let the Charr in. Simply go out the back way along a path through the cliffside and attack the Charr from the rear.

Are you sneaking out or are you using the main doors... from this part i get you use the main doors (if thats possible):

They have changed this quest since the beta weekends. You used to only be able to sneak out (to the left) and ambush the Charr. Once the main party in front of the gates was gone, Rurik would come out. You then escort him through the valley (previously filled with Charr), through the wall, to Stormcaller Hill and eventually to the ruins of Rin.

Now, however, you can do the sneaky version, or you can just open the gates and try to beat the Charr out front in a frontal assault. And it is possible. Sounds like you did things that way. Once it is done, same thing applies (escort Rurik as listed above). Find Rurik and talk to him (unless he died during the assault, in which case you lose).
