I'm with Glasswalker, I typically don't bring Thom or Stefan since they just get in the way and attract groups while I'm trying to pull some of the subgroups out. I'll even bring Dunnie over these two.

I usually take Stefan, Alesia, and Orion with me. Add Little Thom and Claude for the six man party, and then add Lina and Dunham into the eight man party. Sometimes for 8 I'll substitute Reyna for Dunham if I know I'll be going up against a lot of Imps. She usually has the sense to get out of the Maelstrom... I tried taking Lina instead of Claude in the desert but he uses Blood Rit on Alesia all the time so I rarely have trouble getting her to heal the party. The extra damage he deals is noticeable also.
On a side note I used to think Reyna was rather useless until I watched her using different skills. She normally Ignites her arrows on a regular basis which does pretty good damage. Haven't figured out which Elite she has though.
As far as the two tanks running in and aggroing everything in sight, I haven't had too much trouble with that. As a caster I normally pull with a small spell (Flare with my E/Mo or Life Siphon with Nec). Since you can cast all day and they'll all stand there like lumps I can generally pull small subgroups away to a safe fighting distance before I actually call one and attack.

the ranger has really a bad build, practiced stance is such a waste of an elite slot when your only prep is kindle arrows

I bring them both. I play all casters, so I need meatshields. Just be still and let me kill them, Stefan and Little Thom. I always bring claude too. He's a nice extra battery.

I usually bring them both in a party of 8. You can almost always use meat shields. But I prefer Little Thom.
I bring Reyna along too. She's smarter than the rest of em, and typically is the last one standing which means she'll be able to rez signet Alesia or Lina and save the rest of the party.
She does do decent damage. I think people just don't give arrows much credit - but if you pay attention (usually when you're dead already) and watch her go 1v1 in the shiverpeaks, she usually wins. (Thanks to Troll Ungent).
If I didn't need meat shields, I'd pick Reyna over the fighters.

I usually go group of 7 when you can take 8... simple reason... slightly more exp and drops for you lol.
Now I did notice Stefan doing some stuff on his own last night when I used my warrior. He was off tanking on his own instead of going after who I was targeting which he normally does when I play as my ranger or elementalist...

Yeah Devona is nuts... in Pre-Searing you get the mission from her to go with her to battle Grawl and Charr... Well I was lv1 at the time and got smoked so badly, even Stefan would be smarter then to tank all that... right?
Devona is easier on the eyes though...
