Title: Tips for finding a bad group.

Seriously, if you're gonna start your own group, DON'T accept or give out blind invites. You advertise and wait for them to PM you. Just because that guy joined 10 seconds after you put out your advertisement does not mean he read what you typed. It goes the other way around as well. If someone advertises, message them first before putting an invite up.

This simple method really filters out 90% of the idiots.

If sombody doesn't want you in their group they aren't good enough at Guild Wars to understand why Mesmers are essential.

Here is how I have pushed my self, being a memser, into everyones eyes... so to say :P

First I have built up a reputation in UW and Fow and made friends, they know I am good and I know they are good, once two or more of us come together we can form good pugs and even better friend/guild groups. If some idiot joins saying "OMGZOR we need more tanks boot the mesmer" he gets the royal boot :P. In picking up pugs you gain more reputation and friends Nothing starts out very easily and this is no exception. I guess for one class your skill truly is important...

As for people who have no friends or guildmates, when entering the camp form your own groups. No one will kick you if you are leader, and people, when asked nicely will join your group. Other than that you can advertise as what ever you want to be. One of my biggest problems with getting into pugs is that I do not run your standard shut down builds and get "OMGZOR bring *insert some denial spell* you noob". Only problem I have faced

<--------- Ish long time memser player

EDIT: 2 whole hours and nothing? Do you just sit there spamming "mesmer looking for group"? usually its best to keep up with reading the chat. I can't see it ever taking two hours. Maybe 30 minutes... but 2 hours?

2 hours straight no, but going out killing some mobs see what drops , trying to do some quest then coming back and trying again. 2 hours straight would make me insane, who's to say i'm not already, but 2 hours straight would kill the the game out right for me.

Perhaps mesmer isn't for you then :/ Not everyone can play every class, I personally can't stand playing warrior... dunno why. Everyone has likes and dislikes.

I think the mesmer class in practically a necessity in the new areas for these reasons:

1. A lot of the damage being dealt in there is conditions and degen hex spells, with then warriors to pummel you as your health goes down. Shatter hex completely owns them all! Along with backfire and such.

Most of the players in GW are idiots. Mesmers value become apparent ONLY in the later missions however(primarily because counter spells, defensive and offensive magic become more important than sheer physicl damage). Because most of the game mesmers are more of a support baggage, people tend to underestimate their value. However, the problem is that when u trully DO need a mesmer, they are no where to be found. If i blame Anet for this problem, it would be simply this - there isnt enough animation for necros and mesmers - most of the time, other than a few spells, the ingame animation for dot/diversion etc are non-existant. Its easier to notice a meteor shower/fire storm than a backfire. (Not there arnt exceptions)

Here's a little recent example of the idiot groups at work.

(me a n/w my guildie, w/mo)

a: Need 2 nukers 2 warriors for mission

Me: (Since my guildie warrior is helping me out - ask to enter - considering that we could help it really fast )

a: Rejects

Me: Dude, i can nuke, i've got spiteful spirit and got spells to dish tons of dmg.

a: STFU n00b. U are a necro - u cant nuke.

Me: LOL

(Me proceeding to finish it with henchies and my guildie in like 15 min, working on next mission while that guy is still stuck in that mission with his "perfect" team - and taunt him )

When u are in a support class - (i define support as non front line/non popular class), the best people to party with are those whom u know are not idiots - usually if ur guildie is one that has very close connections and communications, doing it with guildies has its benifits. If u do not have guildies, or ur guildies come once every 33 years, then either change ur guild, look for people who are friendly and intelligent and make friends with them.

Personally I think meteor shower is partly to blame for this. Why bother with a mesmer for disruption when you can just drop a meteor shower on the enemy healer's head. He's not going to move out of it.

I kinda wish that ANet would:

A. give us an enemy healer with balanced stance

or

B. give us enemy AI that ZOMG! moved out of AoEs once in a while.

1. Cd for meteor shower is too long
2. easily interupted
3. some creatures do not get knocked down - and they can still cast thier spells. ( i belive a few of them from thunder keep mission)
4. Prolonged fights, the shower's exhaustion starts becoming painful.

The one major "problem" I have with the free expansion is they introduced several "difficult" (but not really, thus the irony quotes) mob groups and quests but couldn't find a way to make the people who play the game smarter, more mature, or any better at playing.

I feel your pain, my Mesmer brothers and sisters. Already we enter the War Camp and see nothing but "we need two more monks" and "group looking for 2 nukers:" tired "battering ram" strategies that didn't even tend to work very well prior to the expansion.

You'd think that a profession who could easily handle hexes, shut down enemy spikers, and destroy enemy Monks without breaking a sweat would get a little more respect, at least in an area with enemies that have huge armor levels and spam debilitating hexes and spells like there's no tomorrow.

But neither we nor our necrotic buddies (who, like us, have no difficulties at all dealing massive damage regardless of armor or terrain barriers) never get any cred. Even in the unlikely event we are invited into groups, the other professions get all the props.

Typical l33t Wa/Mo: "i pwn3d th4t m0k b0ss!!! i r0x0rz" Nevermind the 294 damage our "pointless" backfire did in 3 seconds, the diversions that locked the mob down, or the enchanments we removed off it. Nope, it was all you, Warrior.

And to teams that can't seem to move without *three* Monks, what you need to realize is that damage that *never happens* doesn't *ever* have to be healed or prevented. Hrm, what profession would be best at stoping those 200+hp Stonings? What profession can lower a spell casting mob's damage down to almost a meaningless level? Obviously another Monk, not a Mesmer... No, no, we'll just stand back here looking for a group. We like it. We're used to it.

I may be a little bitter.

...nah.

Maybe one day the general population will wisen up to what our profession has to offer. But I doubt it will be any day soon.

Now that i'm playing my necro, i abuse my guildies instead

I sorta like the fact that mesmers look like they're doing nothing, it suits them (me)

and if mesmers were suddenly popular... they'd probably have a bad rep. like just about every monk had during the 'invinci' monk days recently.

My personal dream party for Sorrow's Furnace would have to be me (a healing monk), a competent human mesmer, and then the rest of the party would be henchies.

Bam. Smooth sailing. (God I wish Dunham was better.)

It's so fustrating playing a Mesmer unless you play with a lot of friends. They are not just anti-casters or anti-boss. There are many enemies that uses hexes, and in those cases shatter hex is the best nuke in the game. Most of the classes in the game are casters (monks, necros, mesmers, and elementalists) and Mesmers can easily "tank" all of them. Warriors can tank several enemy warrior and ranger mobs by absorbing all the damage, which is why many groups want them. Mesmers can "tank" the other 4 classes by preventing them from using spells. Warriors prevent physical damage from hitting the rest of the party, Mesmers prevent magical damage from hitting the rest of the party. For some reason the monk gets all the credit when meteors don't rain out of the sky and destroy the entire party. People also underestimate the Mesmers ability as a damage dealer. Consider empathy, that single spell will deal more damage than any warrior can do in the late game (2 enemies affected with empathy is easily over 50 damage per second). It's not like they just hang back and help fight that one tough boss.

Then again there are many idiot DoT mesmers that confirm many people's stereotypes that Mesmers are useless.

We were crying out for a mesmer in the deldrimor war camp today and could not get one for love nor money. We had 7 out of 8 ppl and were holding the last place for a mesmer. In the end we could not get one so we settled for a death necro. I've never played a memser so I dont know if its as bad as you say it is but mesmers will always be welcome in my team.

People who don't take Mesmers (or rangers for that matter) into their group are not worth having in a group. By not realizing the great value of mesmers indicates that they are shallow players who believe only in the strategy brute force + one heck of a lot of healing. This may work, but makes for a lot of dull, repetitive play.

There is not a mission or quest in this game where a Mesmer in the group is not a great help, if not being absolutely essential. The Mesmer just has to know his/her skills and how to use them, and has to equip the correct skills for the task.

I can't solo with my Mesmer, but I am not interested in that anyway. I did Thunderkeep mission with my Mesmer + 7 henchies, and the Jades were easy to handle for the henchy warriors after a bout of Mesmer clumsiness + ineptitude (the only two of many anti warrior skills that I equipped at the time). The spell casters were lost against the Mesmer backfire + shame (the only two of many anti-spell/skill spells that I equipped at the time). The big bosses had problems using their skills after having had diversion and energy tap cast on them. And my chaos storm (the only one of many direct damaging skills that I equipped) helped kill anything in its way. And not to mention that nice thing about mesmers: their spells and skills work around corners and through walls!

If a player is dumb enough to play the Mesmer as a pure damage giving character, then I would perhaps agree that this Mesmer is not really worthwhile having in a group - you can get damage from warriors, rangers, necros, etc. It is the Mesmer diversity that is so much help. Spell disrupting, skill disrupting, energy stealing, adrenaline-build up blocking, spell-stealing (arcane thievery is neat!), warrior disrupting, hex removing, condition spreading, you name it and a Mesmer with the right skill set can do it.

To the original poster: if you have problems getting into a group with your mesmer, form your own. With the right advertising you will get a group with the right kind of people.

I guess a problem about mesmers is that so many used to play them as a variant of an elementalist. One can tell by the way they are mostly using Chaos Storm and Conjure Phantasm. And big AoE Damage is something a mesmer normally is not good in. Atleast not when bringing Chaos Storm Oo
Sure thing i still let mesmers on my teams, my first character was a mesmer. But that is also saying i know what the class is capable of and i've got a basic idea of the skills they can possibly have and what they do and sadly... most mesmers stick with Chaos Storm and Conjure Phantasm with little to nothing else.
This bad reputation kinda screwed it for most mesmers. I can remember having few to no problems when the game was released. I got my mesmer into the last missions in no time and never had a problem about finding a party, not even in the UW. A few months later then i deleted my mesmer because i was bored with her and she had basically 0 skillpoints left and mesmers (mostly) suck at farming. I made a necromancer/ranger to get the last skills (similiar problem to the modern mesmer problem) and i was running into a wall. Where i've gotten into partys easily before - i was now left standing by oh so many people that would rather have 5 monks than 1 mesmer.
As a test i made a mesmer again and ran into the same problem :/
So sadly this is some kind of bad reputation those two classes have "earned" themselves by some of those poorly played mesmers.

heehee. agreed. and then just watch us in the long run have a much harder time getting into groups because of the reputations of lousy mesmers.
