The worm outside hero's audience is a pretty safe bet, I farmed my bleached shells there, too. If you are careful you only have to kill some of those seed things on the way there. Let the sand worm kill the patrolling sand elementals first.
I could solo the worm with my W/Mo using mending, watchful spirit, healing breeze, Bonetti's and Gladiators Defense (does the main damage there) but it took like 5 minutes each o_O

The easiest one to get to is right outside of Dunes of Despair, across from the teleporter (as previously said). You don't have to kill anything to get to him, if you run through the first batch of Forgotten.
When I get bored, I will go solo a sand wurm - it's a ton of fun if you don't use smiting spells (like so many farmers do). I liken it to two heavyweights going at it. Bringing Bonetti's and Shield Stance normally does the trick for me, along with normal healing and attack skills.

• Crimson Carapace Shield (req. 9 tactics, 16/45/-2 while in stance)
The second item is the real treasure (the Idol). Bleached shells are the ONLY way to get it.
The Cane? Well, you can get a 20% recharge version at other collectors, which IMHO is better anyway.
The exact same Air Staff, Holy Rod, and Shield are available much more easily at other collectors. Just search that collector post for keywords.

Actually.. the shield is the best thing there other collector with it was changed, and none of the other CC shields are 'in stance'

Here, you can find "Guivre des sables" (in French). At one point, I fought 3 of those sand worms in the same spot, sometimes two, most of the times only one. I finally quit. Not one of those worms dropped any shells, in 10 consecutive attempts.
In less than half an hour, going to all the places in the desert, I had bought five Bleached Shell @ 350 gp ea. No problem at all.

Pre-SF, there was a collector just outside of Camp Rankor that would take 5 Frosted Griffon Wings for a 45/-2 stance shield. Post-SF, the bleached shell one is the only place you can get it.

I think the problem lies in the fact you have a full load of henchies with you.

Yes, the one to the east of Hero is the most reliable. Another one always pops up to the west, too, just past the group of sand elementals with the boss in it.
When I was playing my W/Mo, me & the henchies tangled with that group and Alesia and I managed to run away. A devourer popped up and as I was fighting him, the sand worm came up. I managed to finish the devourer, and with Alesia healing me, I managed to take the worm down by myself. Didn't get a shell but, then, I wasn't looking for them at the time, either.
When I *was* trying to farm them with my necro the other day, I snagged one from the one to the east *and* the one to the west on the same run (and this with a full group of henchies, what are the odds on that!). The other three I bought.

Sand Wurms are a pain to tangle with if your not looking for them...
Currently I have have been playing with the devourers and drakes outside of elonas, able to solo those with no problem with my W/Me. But there are Wurms all over the place to the north east of the Elonas gate. I have run into 2 at a time there, only to do balanced stance and try to walk away as they knock me down... or try.
I am thinking of switching 2nd'arys and going for a Mo to do these uber farming builds.

Swords are underestimated. Just started farming the wurms today, takes me about 30 seconds of fighting to kill one with combining stances (Shield, Gladiator's, Bonetti's) and ripostes (Riposte, Deadly Riposte) with Parasitic Bond being my only form of healing (I have my Signet equipped for backup, but I have not needed to use it).

I've done numerous runs to kill these buggers and have one shell to show for it. Not trivial to fight them, and a pain to do it. There is another one that is easier to get to in a way, warping south of Heroes Audience and back in resets the worm in the narrow pass, but you have to be able to handle the elementals and the scarabs (enchantment stripping) so it's not as easy I suspect, unless you are farming with a build that needs no enchants.

i get my bleached shell from "dune of despair" mission farming on siege worm, it is not new method. but it is quite fast, usually will get one shell per mission. as a ranger i use the following skill
dust trap,
barb trap,
flame trap,
apply poison,
distracting shot,
escape,
dodge,
troll unguent
leave the ghostly hero in the starting area, and just run through all the losaru.
ignore the first siege worm, (becoz need ghostly hero to bring the gate) and keep on running until u see the second one,
now dun run directly into the worm, coz it will agro nearby losaru to attack u. i usually run toward somewhere near the mesmer mob(not sure wat it call), but dun agro them, if u do it correctly. no monster will agro on u. now just run into the siege worm, distract, apply poison and lay trap.
after killing the first one, u can move on the second one by using the nearby bridge, but dun run into the bridge again, coz usually it will be block by a losaru. wait him go away first.

the shells are worth 1k. buying them for less is making proffit out of noob players, personally when i need shells to get the collector shield i usually buy them for 1k since these things are so rare and so hard to find and i feel bad scamming ppl.
But i get really mad when i see ppl selling the shield for 20~30k :| this is soo bad.. when will ANET end this by making auction house a reality??

The shield is exactly the same as Grognar's shield, which sells for 30-40k though.

Wurm Farmer - out of dunes of despair, run past forgotten (rezone if they are too close to teleporter) - run around a bit till a wurm attacks, hopefully only 1 or 2 if 3 I died. I use Glad's - shield - Glad's - bonetti's - bonetti's and repeat...during Glad's and shield I use sever + galrath but keep my eye on the adrenaline so I have enough for bonetti's when I need it. Made 4 shells out of about 8 wurms, now have the shield

Personaly I prefer to collect items myself rather than buy them.
I found that for farming Bleached Shells the quickest way was to kill the first 2 seige worms in the Dunes of Despair Mission. For me it the drops were better here than farming the worms that can be found east of Dunes or elsewhere.
Build: W/Mo
Attributes: Healing 8
Strength 13
Axe 14
Equipment: Set 1: Axe (any mods except -1 energy degen)
Shield (str req, enchant bonuses pref)
Set 2: Axe (zelous mod)
Sheild (same as first)
Skills:
1. Sprint
2. Frenzy
3. Penetrating Blow
4. Eviscerate
5. Executioners
6. Disrupting Chop
7. Healing Breeze
8. Mending (yes mending )
The run should not take more than a few mins as this build causes lots of damage quickly.
First start by casting mending and speak to ghost. when doors open speak to him again so that he stays and set off on a run towards the worms (make sure weapon set 1 is equiped so energy regens).
run past the groups of Losaru until you are up to the archer group near the first worm. When level ,sprint past them and head towards/and cross the bridge on the left (use healing breeze if required). Once over the bridge the losaru should not be following and you should be at about half health due to siege attacks and arrow hits. Procced at a run to attack the first worm from the back. Switch to weapon set 2 and go mental on its wormy ass by keeping frenzy up at all times (dont forget to Disrupt its attack ).
For the second worm just run back over the bridge and staying to its left sprint past the group of losaru towards the Storm Kin. They should fall back just before you reach the Storm Kin(DO NOT AGGRO THE STORM KIN).
follow the retreating losaru and sneak around to attack the second worm.
Rinse and repeat.
Drops are poor but you can get every other run at least.
My drops are probably 25-33%.
