The fact that You're all discussing this so much proves it is a great story. Great stories insight people to have their own theories and conspiracies about the story and it's background.
For the Record, Isn't it the Elonians in the Desert. ie. Elona Reach.
I don't know why a whole race of people tried to Ascend at once tho.
Not sure about the Charr Gods, It could equally be the Titans or the Mursaat.
Around the ruins of Old ascalon and the surrounding areas you can find some pretty cool murals, maybe they'll unlock some of the story for yaz.

I dont think the Mursaat could be the Charr gods since they are the White Mantle Unseen Gods and all and lets not forget they did stop the Charr invasion of Kyrta.
If they were they had no use for the White Mantle to start with ...

Mursaat: Ancient race of spellcasters from a world outside of Tyria.
Seer: The seer is a member of a race that once fought the Mursaat. Her reasons for hating them appear to be because of the fact that the Mursaat killed most of her race. ("Why would I help you? Because you will do what my entire race could not... destroy the Mursaat!"
Forgotten: An ancient race brought to Tyria by the Gods. They were displaced by the humans, and in the face of superior numbers apparently disappeared. They didn't die out.
Dragons: Another race brought to Tyria by the Gods.
Humans: The latest fad in Tyrian civilization.
Charr: Another race fighting humanity for domination. Their primary source of power is fire, and they're obsessed with burninating things. They constantly erect totems to the Titans, perhaps in some kind of worship.
Titans: A demonic race from another plane. Presumably, the Charr worship them, as they have Titan totems all over. There ARE mursaat-looking totems, but the titans and the mursaat seem unrelated, as the Mursaat are alien in origin, while the Titans are seemingly demonic. Personally, I'd rayther fight several hundred Mursaat than several hundred Titans, myself.
Lich: Vizier, corrupted by the eeeeevil powers.
Ghosts of the crystal desert: The souls of those who failed the Tests of Ascension, and now forever occupy the desert (I think.).
... Now, the reason I can say the Titans and the Mursaat probably aren't allies, is because the mursaat actually try to PREVENT you from releasing the Titans. Does this mean they're good guys? It might. It's more likely that the Mursaat were seeking domination of the world, and the release of the Titans would have interfered with that, and as such, that's the primary reason they didn't want them unleashed (I mean, who wants to rule a devestated, smoking rock? Mars isn't exactly OUR idea of prime real estate, is it?). So... Basically, it's three (possibly more) different factions, all fighting for control of the world (and the seer just looking to whup some Mursaat arse after receiving a hardcore smacking-down from them in the distant past).
PS: those giant crystal-things, I thought were remainants from the Guild Wars, as opposed to the Mursaat. Aren't there a couple of them in pre-searing ascalon? Plus, nobody knows just how much power the Titans have, or are able to channel to their minions. It's possible they granted the Charr more power than we've seen so far in this chapter (After all, we all thought the stone summit were pretty sissy before we met Dagnar).
Just my thoughts:
~ Kareel.

the seer ... err .. seers ... I should say ...
there are 3 places that the seer can be found ... not just the infuse run in iron mines. the 2 other are on the fire isles ... 1 in hell's precipice and 1 in abbdomens mouth. I'm sure that this just = 1 following you around but I can't throw out the idea that the seer is a member of a higher race that in his own words (my people have fought the mursaat for many centuries ... you ... you are going to do what my people cannot .... you are going to destroy the mursaat)
So in my opinion ... the vizier can turn himself into his lich form on a whim. He fronts himself as the vizier.
We dont actually destroy the mursaat ... we just break the seal ... this was the problem the lich had because the lich couldn't do it with out the help of the chosen. We were pawns, the lich is not strong enough to take down a mursaat army on his own.
I believe that searing happened from a god ... I dont think the mursaat had any reason to cause the searing ... (i mean were there really 100 chosen in ascalon?) that is the only thing that the mursaat were doing, gaurding the door of komaliea. The stone summit and the dwarves have been at war long before the mursaat. They are constantly at war with eachother and in no way have I seen a relation linking the stone summit to anybody (minus the dwarves).
These are just some thoughts

I've only seen two "good guys" in the lore in the manual
- The Forgotten Ones
summoned (out of The Rift) by the old gods, brought to this world to be the custodians. Their task: sheperd the other creatures of the land through this time of transition, while the gods continued to create the world around them.
- King Doric
who pleaded to the Gods when magic was initially destructively rampant among all intelligent races striving for dominance

Wouldn't the gods be good guys? And what about Rurik, the Chosen, Glint, and assorted plot characters.

Glint and The Chosen are not mentioned in the manual
the Gods are *neutral* at best
you are correct that Rurik and some other people can count as good but there's not much thats said about them for past lore

it makes the most sense in a wierd kinda way.
Isn't it odd how absolutely no monster can or even will harm Gwen?

All i have to say is that if you are a hydromancer with ward against harm then the final missions are cake. i did the last one with all henchies and not one death. We even cleared the whole map (although the bonus didn't pop up that time... not sure why).

The way I look at it, is if the Searing had never happened, the chosen (players) would've remained in Ascalon to continue fighting the Charr. So why would the Mursaat give the Charr the power to destroy Ascalon if it would force the Chosen from that country? Most of the humans reside in Kryta and Ascalon. Orr has been destroyed, so that is counted out. There's no hints that any other race besides humans can be chosen (You don't see dwarves in the desert, do you?). So with the Mursaat killing all the chosen in Kryta, that leaves the Vizier with one option: Ascalon. But if the Ascalonians are too busy fighting their little war against the Charr, who knows how long it will take for the Chosen to find their way into the prophecies? Therefore the war needed a little.. Push. So perhaps the Vizier gave the Charr the power to cause the searing. The statue that most looks like the Vizier IS burning after all, and NOT the one that looks like the Titan. Perhaps the Vizier knew that if the Ascalons were forced out of their country, they'd seek refuge in Kryta. But he didn't count on one thing, Ascalon's perseverance. After the searing they continued to fight, harder and harder. King Adelbern wouldn't abandon his country, and Rurik seemed loyal to his king, but hated the charr. Rurik also wanted to escape to Kryta, but wouldn't leave his father unless something powerful happened. Time for the Vizier to give another little push. The Charr take Lady Althea, Rurik's soon-to-be-wife, and burn her. Rurik hears news of this. Obviously he knows she's dead, because you've collected her ashes. Rurik's hate for the charr is now even deeper. Not only have they ruined his country, killed his people, they've killed the girl he loves. So he decides to enact a sort of.. Revenge, and decides to foray into the charr's territory, freeing both his people, and hurting the charr. When they return to Rin and fight off the invading army, the king shows up. Rurik has had his limit, and snaps. The king banishes him, and Rurik decides to head to Kryta. You, being of the Vanguard, are loyal to Rurik and leave with him. The Vizier sits and waits, knowing you'll reach him eventually, he has only to bide his time.

Well to me not enough of the story has been revealed to start theorizing too much, I mean what continent did the Charr come from? (EDIT: unless the devs decide there is more Tyria up north) And also there is still Cantha (and possibly other continents) to explore.

EverBlue: I like your ideas, but the chronology is a bit off. As I understand it, Orr wasn't destroyed until after the Searing; basically the Charr smash Ascalon with their meteors-and-fire-and-death attack, and while Ascalon is trying to figure out what the hell just happened, the Charr armies march through and southward over the mountains and through the Crystal Desert against Orr. They smash the Orrian armies, approach the capital of Arah, and are destroyed when the Vizier reads a forbidden scroll and nukes the entire peninsula, in the process becoming the Lich we all know and (mis)trust.
Subsequent attacks on Kryta are narrowly repelled by the White Mantel(wonder if the Mursaat ever became directly involved in those battles? I'd just LOVE to see some Charr feeling the agonizing touch), and two years later when our story resumes post-searing, Ascalon is still limping along and fighting back, Orr is destroyed and gone, Kryta is firmly under the control of the White Mantel but under attack by undead hordes.
But the rest, about the Vizier giving the Charr the power to cause the Searing(the gift that keeps on giving!) and then poking things along when necessary, makes sense. At least it does to me.

Umm. If the The Forgotten Ones are good guys, why do we have to fight and kill them to Ascend? And...isn't Lyssa the Mesmer God? And...doesn't the Prophet in TOA mention a story about "Sarah?" And isn't Gwen's mom named Sarah? And...Can you really consider the Seer a "He?" I'd be more inclined to say "She" or "It." And wouldn' t "We" be considered good guys also? And really, I actually liked Evennia's voice acting. But no, I don't understand what all happened with Markis. The only thing of this whole game I truly have a grasp on is that "Charr bad. Me kill Charr." Meh.

good point
Prink Rurik makes a statement to the Charr during mission 4
(among all of his other corny statements)
he says: back to the Rift you go!
is this a possible hint of where the Charr hordes came from?

those were deadly trials
you dont fight the forgotten ones anywhere else in game
(with the exception of Dragons Lair)
for quests like Ancient Wisdom, you interact with a friendly forgotten one
pages 26 and 27 of the game manual describe how the forgotten ones were "custodians" to help the gods

Nevertheless we found one seer in Mineral Springs too
