In my Old Ascalon days I found at least 15 Ascalon Keys... but none have dropped ever since then.

Someone may have already mentioned this, but a chest always drops the same color item. So if someone gets a gold, then all drops from that chest will be gold.
So if you or someone else gets a purple drop, tell everyone, so that others don't waste their keys. This way you'll be more likely to actually get good items from a chest.

Cost of a shiverpeaks key = 600g. Average sell price of an item dropped from a chest = 300g (to players). Or, if we're honest, we'll salvage them for less than that.
Here's the rub...how can an absolutely perfect r8 15^50 fellblade (208g) be worth LESS than a key to a trader? CLEARLY there are plenty of holes in the engine. That said, it can't be easy to devise.
In any case, I guess if you want to spend your time chest farming and sift through the dozens of worthless items in the hopes of finding one good one, then it's useful to you. If you play the game for the sake of playing, keys are the biggest gold sink in the game. IMHO

I find this to be untrue. I find that I can sell almost any gold item dropped from a chest for at least 3k unidentified. thats a profit 2.4k on each shiverpeak chest if you make sure the chest is gold before you open it.

Interesting... you've somehow made a chest run for Shiverpeak chests. Otherwise there is no possible way to know the colour of a chest.
Who actually buys Unid weapons anymore. Doing chest runs around the Shiverpeaks is bad enough, but sitting around waiting for some tool to buy them? I'd rather just ID them, get the perfect mod (lets face it they all are these days) and sell it later on. I still have a +20% damage vs Dwarves Sword Pommel i found wandering around Ice Floe because i can't be arsed to sell it.
I just wanna know what happened to the drops in FoW. Do Anet automatically decide what would piss players off the most and make it drop alot? Who the f*ck actually wants a focus or a wand from a chest, if i pay 1.5k for a key i want something from it that actually has a chance of been worth something. Not to mention the demented number of Shadow Staffs that drop. The best i've had so far was 2 Shadow Bows in a row, both of them with +30 health mods, thanks to the games utterly shit salvaging methods i got wood from 1 of them.
Ok, when you can find plenty of decent items, thats not much of a problem, but exactly how irritating is it to find a perfect mod for the first time in your GW career that is worth over 50k, to have it salvage to 500golds worth of materials?

Well, I can't really be a bitch about it, but mis-salvaging one 30hp fortitude grip isn't going to kill you. I've mis-salvaged 3 20% enchant pommels, a 29 bow grip, +5 insightful, two 20/19 bow grips, and a 20/19 hilt, all in the past week. I gave up salvaging anything any more. I get my guildies to do it for me.

Im a 55 Monk Farmer and I always seem to get key drops from trolls. As for what I get from the chests..about 60% gold and rest purple. One place where should take keys...the Fire Area..by Ember Area. Those missions have like 4-5 chest throughout and I have been soo Lucky. I got a Sup Vigor, Maj Vigor, Fellblade..gold and max. If your gonna do those missions you must take keys...and I take a grip because you will have like 3 peeps in your group looking to buy. Once people see that its a gold chest they will pay you double or even triple for the cost of the Key.
Think about it...wouldn't you pay double the price of a key just to open a gold chest?

No i wouldn't. When i open a chest in FoW and its gold i don't instantly think *wow i would've paid 3k for this key for the privalige of getting a gold Truncheon*
If you could guarantee me the next drop was gonna be a Gold Fellblade/Chaos Axe, then i'd pay double.
I haven't just missalvaged 1. Infact my first 2 perfect mods ever (both +30 Axe mods) salvaged to jackshit. Since then about 40% of the mods i've actually wanted have salvaged, earlier i lost a nice +30 health 19% deathbane staff to a equally valuable 14 wooden planks. Its bullshit is what it is.

I'd say I've lost money overall on keys, but I've also gotten some nice mods and a few of the weapons even made my current rotation.
Unfortunately, the other 99% of the items that weren't good enough for me, also aren't good enough for anyone else.
I guess I just like the anticipation of seeing what will come out of the chest. Every once in a while, I'll get something I can sell for a nice chunk of change just for the skin (Zodiac weapons) even though the stats aren't as good as my Crafters/collectors items.

Out of all the chest drops I have obtained (say 80), had 2 nice mods and 1 perfect Bow.
The entire rest of them were sold to merchants, I think I gave 1 to a guildie.
So in terms of monetary value - I have probably lost out on 20k...
But, the perfect bow made up for all the previous useless tat.
My ranger now has a lovely bow to use when in battle.
I only buy Darkstone/Minkers keys now - As those are the only ones to give decent items I've found.
Might try a few more shiverpeaks keys after reading this thread though.
I picked up my current axe as a mob drop out in Snake Dance (+30HP, Dam 14%^50, Sundering 10/8) so there could be decent items in the chests too.
