I think that they spawn if anyone stays still for X seconds.
Maybe the first time through no-one happend to stay still.

I first beat this mission a few weeks ago and just within the past few days I went back and redid it.
I thought maybe I was just not remembering correctly, but It did seem to me that there were many more Torment Arms this time through.

It's random.
In one run, I had up to 4 of them spawn right one after another after, and that happened at least 3 times in a mission.
Other time, there was one single claw that spawned during the entire mission, and even that one was on top, where it never hurt anyone.

I usually have at least two and sometimes three spawn in a row- it's annoying, but it's nothing new.

Just kill the monoliths fasts enough and stay on the move, and they will never spawn.

Yeah defintitely always got a lot more later on. They killed my on my first try. On my second try I made to pay primary attention to claw and devote myself to flag management. By the third damage rep I needed to retreat about 3 or 4 times and then kill them. I still made expert but they stack up about 3 or 4 claw pops at that point so you gotta stay alert and retreat when they pop.
I finished the game two weeks after release and so if something was different it was really early.

I noticed this aswell. Got almost no Torment Claws spawns with real ppl, but when trying with hech/heroes they spawned like mad. I were even killing way faster with the hench.

I did this mission with 5 characters , and I didn't have any issues, "BUT" just a few days ago , I tried again with my warrior [because I didn't use the book of secrets the first time] and .... MAN.... exactly what lipp74 said: Torment Arm things spawning one after the other NON-stopping !!!! . Is like lipp74 can read mi mind ^_^ , this seems only to be with a warrior , because the same day i tried with my necro and my monk, and everything was normal as always[just a few Toment Arms], but with my warrior I cannot do it anymore... lol

I did the mission a few days ago with my warrior and didn't have a problem. First time i got expert so i went in again (this time knowing better what to do) and got masters. I did notice that on my second run, because i did it much faster i got very few claw spawns but the first time i got several.
The claw spawns do seem to be related to how long you stand around for.

i agree, if ur teammates arent moving claws start spawning in HUGE numbers but as long as nobody's staying still for longer than few sec u'll have to fight no more than 3-4 claws during the whole mis...
