An MM can be quite effective as long as you use Jagged Bones as your elite. I would also recommend bringing that Animate Bone Minions so you have more bodies quickly. The rest of the build you can use the standard skills (you probably won't want to bring putrid explosion though).
As a paragon, here was my set-up:
-support para
-healing monk
-tank
-mm
You should be okay once the minions factory starts rolling, although you will most likely need to use your MM hero's flag to get them to follow you. (otherwise they will fall behind as they focus on casting Jagged Bones or Death Nova)
I have gotten 2 armor pieces with this build, general set-up and I know for sure it can be improved upon. (my own para build was quite cruddy and I was using Melonni as the tank)
Extra tip: Explore the map while the countdown ticks away at the beginning. That way you will reveal all the spawn points on the map and won't won't miss them when they light up.

strong spike damage is the key here run with a monk and 3 damage dealers that can do high damage fast and often
i did this with my assassin using assassins promise unsuspecting strike black lotus death blossom black spider twisting usually killed each enemy outright, thigns like burning arrow or rampage as one are also quite effective here

it's been a few days, you might have worked it out by now, but anyways ~
I've made it onto the boards a bunch in the past week or so. I'm playing a Restoration Ritualist so it's easier for me to control the Heros and stuff, but the three companion I take with me are:
Norgu: domination/shutdown mesmer
Goren: KDAS (Knockdown-Aftershock Warrior)
or Zenmai: using the Disciple of Death build
Olias: Minion Master w/ Jagged Bones
To me, the Minion Master is vital to provide additional damage and a meatsheild or buffer to stop the baddies from attacking me or the Heros directly.
Norgu is good because you're dealing with at least one strong caster (the Mage) per portal so you need to shut them down before they wipe out your party in three spells.
I flip back and forth from Goren and Zenmai. Both of them work well and they both don't use the builds the way they should, but they get the job done. And Zenmai just looks so darned cool in that Mysterious Armor. Regarding Goren as a KDAS - he's big, he's strong, he doesn't always remember that Aftershock comes *after* the knockdown, but he's fun to play with and doesn't get mad at me for yelling at him.
