Having all three campaigns, I have come to the conclusion that Prophecies has the highest difficulty level of all the campaigns in regard to character progression.
Getting the max armor, getting the extra attribute points and becoming "ascended" all seem to be much more easily attained in Factions and Nightfall.

Getting a bit off topic, but the answer is both yes and no.
Prophecies is a slow build up of ones character. I quite like that, you progress slowly, unlocking skills by doing quests. As a newbie player, this was great as it meant I thoroughly learned basic skills as I went along, building up my knowledge portfolio through the game. Ascension was a Big Thing.
For the expansions though, things had to be different. A bunch of level 20 characters were going to be heading over in droves wanting new challenges. There wasn't the opportunity for the long slow progression as the existing high level characters would simply rampage through a bunch of low level easy missions. That meant the main plotline had to be high level from the start. Of course this meant that new characters in the expansion had to be powerlevelled in the noob area by rediculous quest rewards and so forth, in order to be able to cope with the main mission areas.
The upshot was a Tyria where you felt some degree of satisfaction with each new level and each new skill and for doing the 15 point quests, whilst the expansions (especially factions) seemed like a bit of a quick XP grind to L20.

Prophecies was a must for anyone who wanted to really learn the game, Factions and Nightfall still catered to the new players, but you did get dropped in on the full force of the blade swing real early.
Regarding the exploration of the area between B and D, it certainly can take quite a bit of time if you are not prepared for. At first I wasn't doing so well at all, I had most everyone on TeamSpeak muting me due to my foul "mood"
I gave up after bout an hour of being a complete idiot though. But the next day I went back with a little more planning. I can't remember how long it took me to do, but I actually came out at Beacons thinking, that was the most fun I've had in a long time. To me the best was the henchies, they had 60% DP with me for a while until I managed to get to Grenths' temple, got myself a bit of Morale back and that was that
If you start this out by being negative, the whole trek will be the worst thing you will ever attempt. Turn the coin and tell yourself it is going to be a tough fight that you can win and the results are quite amazing
As for the running, there are a few builds to accomplish it, I've seen Mesmers, Monks, warriors and Dervishes do this. So it is possible, but highly improbable for a low level character.
If you are playing through the game, then stick to the storyline, you will enjoy it a lot more. If you are only after armour, perhaps look at Lions Arch > Cantha trip instead

Hmm, hate it, spent 2 hours yesterday with henchies, but it's really not my idea of fun. Got mauled in dreadnoughts and took a run. Dervishes run it pretty well with a speed stance, vow of silence and fleeting stability being the core skills of their build. Only cost me 3 k and he was highly skilled .
I'm not going to bother to do the early areas of prophecies with my new necro, but quite a lot of good elites are in the shiverpeaks and fire islands.

Hmm travelling to Droknars from Beacons (fighting style) Sounds like a fun PvE activity for my Ranger, or Dervish or maybe warrior.

As people said : it's hard but with 2 player +heros, I managed to 90% of the run to camp rankor with a monk (which left at 75%) and a lv 15-to-17 Meloni. Of course I had to solo 2-3 groups (as a spirit spammer). But heck it's my favorite part of the game, incredibly hard but way more fun mobs than grenth'S footprint(furthest I went into the game).

It's quite possible to fight your way from Beacons to Droknar's. I did it with myself(An A/W with high dps and Watch Yourself), two Hero monks(WoH and Divert Hexes, both with two interupts), one Hero ele(generic Searing Flames with two interupts), and the war and ranger henchmen. It took me about 4 hours to get down to Camp Rankor, although I did make a slight detour in order to get the Deldrimor War Camp. But all in all, it just took a boat load of patience and an upbeat attitude in order to complete.

I did it with hench and heros. The hench mostly just died and took some hits, but that is great. My Olias got like 10 minions so fast and it made the trip a whole lot faster.

I've cleared down from Beacon's to Dreadnoughts with three heroes and two hench, it wasn't so much difficult as really really slow.

I did Beacons->Droks with Zhed, Sousuke, Master, and myself (Monk). I've also done Hell's Precipice with Zhed, Sousuke, Goren, and myself.
Tyria is disappointingly easy with all the new skills.
