Since you have a ranger primary or secondary, you're set. Fill up Beast Mastery and fill your entire bar with skills that let your pet deal damage; the Doppleganger doesn't use a pet and won't be able to use any skills.
Put the rest of your points into some weapon mastery skill and fight with that weapon to maximize damage. I was able to kill the Doppleganger in less than 10 seconds this way. >_>

Try this, go R/Me. set your domination to 12 and bring backfire, empathy, and 5 other useless spells that wont harm like spirit shackles, clumsiness, and illusion of haste. Put charm animal in the last slot and set your beastmastery to 12. As soon as you get in, cast backfire followed by empathy and just watch as he sacs himself but do NOT attack. You may need to use 2 backfires. If you have signet of midnight put that in instead of charm animal.

some people say nay, and I haven't ascended a char in awhile, but make sure you set your bar up with the skills you want the dopple to use first.
useless skills from left to right. it used to work like a charm every time, not sure if it's nerfed though

Just remember that while the AI can be very smart and resourceful in certain situations, it can also be incredibly stupid. Sure, a ranger hero can use interrupts with inhuman speed and efficiency, but the AI can't chain certain skills together.
For all you warriors out there that want to master this mission, just use a steady stance build with frenzy. The AI will activate frenzy, thus taking double damage and the bonus is that it can't chain steady stance with drunken blow properly, so it'll just keep falling on the ground.
It would've been funny to watch if the mission hadn't ended in about 30 seconds.
So if the above suggestions don't work for you, tinker around with your skills...it'll probably be a fun learning experience.

Seeing as you are a ranger you can just bring along 5 spirits, 2 your best two attack and charm pet. Put all your atts in beast mastery and marksmanship, he will spend forever casting the spirits while you hammer him with attacks and your pet, works like a charm

The ranger is a great one to kill the dopple with. Load your bar with spirits, doesn't even matter which ones because he'll die before they are all down, and then bring power shot and another attack skill. The dude will just sit there and call up spirits. He'll never even attack you. Just go right in and while he's doing his thing, kill it. Viola!

you can always kill your doppelganger easily, as log as you're necro or secondary necro...
just take 2 skills: [skill]enfeeble[/skill] and [skill]Insidious Parasite[/skill]
you can easily defeat your doppelganger in HARD MODE with this...
just put curses on 12 or 16, doesnt really matter... cast the 2 skills, keep them up...
enfeeble causes him to do less damage, and therefore insidious parasite is well enough healing

I went through the doppleganger a long while back, way before anything in the game was programmed to run from damage pulse spells. He folded easily to Meteor Shower & Co., if memory serves me correctly, and netted me the bonus on roughly the third try.
Later, I took my ranger through and figured I'd just fill my bar with useless skills. Nature rituals had the longest cast times, so I figured I could pummel the doppleganger a good bit while he cast them. Sure enough, the fool stood there, dropping one spirit after another.
But my recent attempts at rolling the Hard Mode doppleganger with my E/Mo were far less successful: he was able to outnuke me, and he had been patched to use Healing Breeze, so he was bound to outheal me as well. With quite a few things already on my "to do" list, I decided to leave the matter for another day.
That is, until this thread reminded me of the way I got my ranger through Augury Rock. Being the crazy idiot that I am, I had decided to start buying regular tomes, and had coincidentally unlocked all non-elite ranger skills on my E/Mo since my last attempt. Packing 5 nature rituals onto my bar, I brought along my level 5 pet and two skills as a backup plan: Mark of TROGDOR and Mind Blast.
And he fell for it! Like a good little AI bot, the HM doppleganger diligently cast all the nature rituals, stopping between them only long enough to fire off a Mind Blast in my direction. I wasn't beating his damage output, but I was casting more frequently and he was constantly burning. Then, he decided to drop both Predatory Season and Winnowing, which made my level 5 pet eat him
Mission, bonus, 300-something XP for the kill.

It's easiest with a necro secondary. Insidious parasite is arguably the best skill against him, something extra like enfeeble and Spiteful spirit is just gravy and with them you can very easily get 10 second kills

If you are planning to beat him on your ranger. Put your points into beast mastery and some into expertise. Fill your bar with nothing but pet attacks and charm animal. This way you can kill the doppleganger with relative ease as you order you pet to attack him, he doesn't have a pet to help him so all the skills you got are useless to him
