I think the time you play a character is corrected, just recently mine reset for my first player, but not for the others that i have been trying to get caught up to the first one, so i have been neglecting my first character, and i think its been about a month and they reset themselves, i tried with the other characters. Because it was the double hero bonus weekend, but like i said, the other characters didnt reset.

I doubt you aren't allowed to touch it at all for the 30 days. Anet isn't that dumb, they know people would just get pissed off and start bitching on the forums about how unfair it is.

Aaaanyway, I've recently made a record of my chest adventures and have made the following conclusion - it's really this simple. Don't touch a chest for 30 (possibly 31, I left it that long to make sure) days and you will be able to open it again.

All the below toons checked a chest on 11/04.

Only two of them could open, so I deliberately didn't open any chests at all for 31 days, and got the following results:

Chests / Do Not Touch / Buried Treasures are only up to where the particular toon has got to in the game)

Marisa (Elonian)
13-05 4th opening / all treasure up to and including Vabbi. All refilled, all purple, cash very low

Saraphim (Tyrian)
12-05 3rd opening / all treasures available in game. All refilled, 6 golds, one sapphire, rest purple, cash diminishing

Ruta (Canthan)
14-05 3rd opening/ all treasures up to and including Vabbi. All refilled, all gold, cash diminishing

Serafina (Elonian)
12-05 3rd opening / all treasures up to and including Vabbi. All refilled, all gold, cash diminishing.

Katina (Elonian)
15 -05 3rd opening / all treasures up to and including Vabbi. All reflled, all gold. Cash diminishing.

Tara (Canthan)
13 - 05 3rd opening / all treasures up to and including the desolation and Nightfallen Jahai. All refilled, 7 golds, rest purple, cash diminishing. The torment and desolation chests were gold, with ok cash but were only on the 2nd opening.

Not really that complicated. The more you open them, the poorer the reward and yes, if you test a chest you have to wait at least 30 days before testing it again. So the best way to do it is to try and do them all in as short a time as possible.

I haven't been able to open any of them since the second weekend they were open.

Saraphim, Your testing seems to match up with my experiences with the chests. Although I am not too positive about the diminishing returns. I am currently opening chest for the 3rd time and I just got a Ruby out of the Mirror of Lys chest. But to be honest, I have not paid that much attention to the amount of platinum as it seems to be a random amount and I have to take a full team of henchmen in order to make it to some chests alive.

Fairly certain my tyrian character has not even visited Forum Highlands since January. Could not open the do not touch there.

Nearly 100% of my playtime is on this character, so I'm sure that has something to do with it. All of my other characters are able to open these as normal.

ie: These chests reward you for having a bunch of mules/characters you hardly play. :]

After a very long break i decided to try them again.

Character:
*Avelia (Tyrian),
*Playtime High,
*Elite Treasure Hunter(5),
*it was 3rd opening,
*last time succesfully opened ~25th January (2nd opening - 13/13 golds, no diminishing gold)
*last failed try ~28th March

Opened:
2/2 RoT: 1 gold+3,0xx gp | 1 diamond+2,9xx gp (diminishing gold starts with 2nd opened chest)
2/2 Desolation: 1gold, 1purp with 1,9xx, 1,8xx gp
3/3 Vabbi: 1gold 2purp (gold lower than in desolation, but i forgot, certainly diminishing)
1/3 Kourna: 1purp, 8xx gp
stopped here. Only 3 golds total.

So it seems that the time passed since last opening has nothing to do with the quality of drops. Or maybe only full months passed count and i was at near 2 which counted as 1.
Seraphim got all golds in his 3rd runs and straight after just 1month however, so there have to be another variable that affects the drops.

What I would like to know is do the free chests drop differenly in HM as opposed to RM?

Any thoughts on this?

If the chests ought to have been refilled for any of my characters [I do the runs on 10 chars] they should have been refilled for my sin, which last successful chest run is more than 3 months away now. My other chars ranged from 1-2 months, and all had their chests refilled with various content.
My sin still finds all chests empty.

Previously I was convinced that each of my chars could only open 3 times and no more--but I believe now it was just that I was
a) not waiting long enough between tries and
b) assuming the ONE chest I'd try was indicative of ALL the chests, therefore resetting that ONE chest each time lol.

This past weekend, I started treasuring again, after a wait between tries of over 31 days.

Sin was first, only her second time through, she got mostly golds. I did from Torment through Kourna (never bother w/ Istan). I hardly ever play her.

Everyone else (9 other chars), moderate play time, ranging from 2nd to 4th time through the treasures, I even decided to skip Kourna and only grab Torment through Vabbi. They all got mostly purple and half the gold as normal.

Everyone, that is, except my monk. She has the most xp, maxed titles, I was going through the 4th time, she got mostly golds and high plat. She was the second to last one I brought through this treasure run, so obviously the 50-odd treasures I opened before her that weekend, had no effect on her drops.

Just tried again with my monk - 3rd time opening chests - waited 33 days - every chest had a gold. This is my oddball, so all the rest of my characters are up again on the 16th of June.

I managed to open them all after well over 4 months wait after previously opening them, to my suprise a week later i was able to open them again (which i discovered while doing some HM Vanquishing)

FWIW - I got a bit frustrated waiting for my main characters to reset, so left all treasures, except those for a new character, alone for a little over a month. I also stopped playing GW for one week at the end of May. Over the past week, I've raided the treasures for seven characters and I'm 80K richer.

Once I've got all my characters access to all NF treasures, I'll probably try a system of taking half of my chars through each month, so the other half gets at least a month off and see how that goes.

All my chars ahve opened them all 4 times some have completed NF others are still at noob island but thtats 9 chars that all have opened them the same amount of times...they have all waited the same time in between time so t must be the 31days+1 day per an opening

Rechecked Domain of Pain on my warrior, thinking she hadn't opened (I was wrong, she was the first character I checked that month) = ~1700 g and a purple. It's been ~2 weeks now, so I'll pop open everything else and see what I get.

Normally I get golds all the way until Vabbi, then purples all the rest.
