The 1v1 arenas are against AI, not other players - anyone should be able to do them with any class. Chances are, you won't know exactly what you will be facing, which means you'd be best off making a versatile build.

I thought one got a distinct set of fighting skills, so that any profession would be equally competitive.

Its very possible the reputation you gain from these battle may be account based. In this way if you are a great Monk Protector or Healer but lousy at Smite or 55ing you stand a chance to gain reputation through your Mesmer or Assassin.
Plus I think ANET will run different builds for many of the former henchmen you will fight. Many builds that will kill off enchant heavy builds you may intend to use. Otherwise I don't think any former Henchman could possibly beat my 55 SV necro 1v1. So expect some intelligent designs by ANET for you to encounter.

Well, regarding how the monk kept his skills and how some classes may be disadvantaged...
The Norn value brute strength over spells and magicks and stuff, so its just as well. Even then, I am pretty sure every class has a decent solo build. Not sure bout the Para and Mes though. I dont use em too much.

I think Mesmer will do just fine.
The key will be to take a mix of spells to shut down casters and melee, but since you are only facing one opponent, it shouldn't be too hard...
especially if they don't fix the AI to keep from attacking with Empathy or casting spells with Backfire (both Domination).
Then again, I might just make an Illusionary Weapon build to see how it goes.
Of all the things in GWEN, I'm actually most excited about the Norn Arenas and the Asura Polymock game.

Your just fighting NPCs, why would you need to be competitive?

How´s the deal with the minipets? will the hall of monuments display the ones we have or the ones we unlocked? otherwise anyone could have all the minipets (in case he has the money of course).

The Monument to Resilience is displaying armors for several professions, so I'm guessing that means that the HoM is account based.

hmm for anyone who zoomed in - or watched it on a huge HD TV (like myself ^^) Will have noticed some details...Like the price of a coffin in Tyria
but most importantly Sologogomon was using [skill]"Watch Yourself!"[/skill] - now that adds an interesting spin on 1v1

Well... the hall is basically a coffin for your character... much like Piramids are made while the future entombed guy is still alive...
Maybbe some things are account based, but others not... it's still known that we'l be able to save character names...

The burning forests were awesome. Can't wait to fight in that. Wonder if we catch fire like standing in lava?
Think I'm going to have to go get a crimson carapace shield for Jora. It looks norn and should suit her well. She's pretty tall too (or the monk is really short) so maybe a fellblade or a longsword? Not sure what axe would go well with her though. Most of the axes are pretty short and stunty. Maybe a tyrian handaxe or a chaos axe just for the colour
Ah, can't wait
