I have always believed that diamonds we're supposed to be an exchange item for 100k + deals (instead of ecto). A collection of wealth, just like in rl.
Anyway, I am simply gonna save up a lot of gold.
|
For diamonds to be a worthy trade item - replacing ecto - they have to be worth something. If they have no real ingame use, and can be bought from a rare material trader for 100g (or is it 200g?) each, they will NEVER replace ecto which currently has a steady price of around 5k.
Take a 200k deal in ecto: 100k + 20 ecto.
Diamonds (NOT AT CURRENT PRICE WHICH IS INFLATED BECAUSE OF GWEN): 100k + 4 stacks of diamonds (1000).
Obsidian armour is what gives ecto its value. If it didn't have a use then, no matter how rare it was, it wouldn't be worth what people pay for it.
Diamonds do not have a use atm, so it is a safe bet that they will have a use (be it armour or weapons) in GWEN. Of course there are no garantees...

Diamonds aren't just inflated because of GWEN... they've been sitting over 3K for many months now. There are some people who claim that certain guilds bought up diamonds in an attempt to influence the market. Not too certain about that bit. I do know that the 4K was not a recent spike in price though, and that Diamonds haven't been 100g at the trader in ages.

It’s going to be interesting with the alternative methods in getting diamonds when EotN comes out. I have this feeling there might be a diamond mine of some sort. However like Nightfall I see it be a light chance in getting them.

Agreed, Ca, they have not. But a LOT of people have been playing the market waiting for the next installment. Afterall why have diamonds without a use? The price was a slow increase at first as a few people bought a couple thinking that they had to have SOME use, and now with GWEN coming the price has spiked. If they then had NO use they would drop back down to trader prices.
Think about fur. It was required for 15k ascalonian warrior armour, which was "bugged". Fur was selling for 500g+ a piece during the time when people were taking advantage of this "bug". I farmed charr to death for this reason. The moment the "bug" was fixed the market fell. It only took a day to bottom out at 100-150g.
People have been buying up on diamonds for a while, hoping to ride the boom when the next installment came along. If diamonds are not linked to something desireable (weapons or armour) the price will drop out of these too, very quickly.
In many ways ecto won't be replaced as THE tradeable commodity simply because Obsidian will always be considered the "highest" level of armour available. If armour became available in UW or in "other god realms" there might become other commdities that may replace or be used alongside ecto.
Anyhow, the point of my post was to point out that to replace ecto a material has to have value. What gives it that value is supply and demand. What determines demand is what it can buy. If it isn't required for armour or weapons or something else "desirable" its value will be next to nothing.

Dwarves typically are able to do finest armors and weapons, in some RPG games (or sometimes they just believe so in RPG games).
Not surprising that Diamonds make some use. Maybe they even make new rare crafting material like Mythril.

you are all investing in diamonds and other materials and waiting for the massive price boost, wel thers not guna be 1, because the reason prices go up is because there is a huge demand for them, but because u have all bought your diamonds already, technically the price boost has already happened and when eotn comes out there wont be the huge demand and therefore the huge price boost. in fact what could happen is that people dont like the armor, and sell all the diamonds to traders, so what happens then is that ther is a huge amount, but very little demand so the price will drop.

Yeah, 1 reason price goes up is because players interact with traders.
Imagine if ppl speculate on stacks of diamonds and suddenly release them into the market after GWEN come out lol.
Everyone will be like "WTS diamonds" and nobody actually will bother to touch the material trader because they can buy at like trader-1k from other players.
....Huge diamond supply blowout.
Even worse is if it turns out that diamond won't be used at all (less likely to happen). Then anet will owe these ppl to at least give the some sort of "Diamond Merchant" title track lol.
Let's see.

There is still a demand for Rubies and they are @ 6.5k steady. Nightfall has been out for how long now? If there is a use for Diamonds in GW:EN they will have a price similar to Rubies.

Do people realize how many people read this threads? If you are trying to get ahead of the game and pre-stock on things you HOPE will go up, why go blabbing? Alot of other people will get the same idea and it wont go up as much.

I still have around 10 diamonds that I bought for 8-10k each, when they were new. If I knwe then that they would be like 3k a few months later I wouldn't have bought them. But well, now they're going up again.

Rich.. maybe. I may bite my tongue later, but I seriously think it was a bad move investment wise.
A few things need to happen for diamonds to replace ecto as the primary tradeable rare material --
1. GWEN needs to introduce armor that requires diamonds for crafting. (obviously).
2. Said armor must require equal (if not more) amounts of diamonds per armor piece than ecto/shards.
Rubies / Sapphires failed to do this because Vabbian armor only required 2-3/ea per armor piece.
3. The aforementioned diamond-requiring GWEN elite armor must take advantage of the new graphics engine, making it the most "texturally pleasing" and consequently, most sought-after armor in game.

When a player is attempting to sell an item worth in excess of 100k, what rare material is usually asked for to compensate?
Reread what I wrote, I never said anywhere in my post that ectos were worth more than rubies. Fact of the matter is, they are still the most sought after rare material despite being worth less than rubies.
