I have to echo kicks66's impression... But that may be just hasard. Does someone have a different feeling about it?

What is making them hard to run through? They tend to spawn in different positions each time, some which make it really difficult to run through and some really easy.

sometimes if you can run past only the shadow army and stop to heal, you can lose about 240-250 hp by just tanking out the skeles.
Their main sources of damage are from E-surge (80), Deep Freeze (64ish), Shatter Enchantment (no enchants to shatter), Cry of Frustration (don't stop to Troll), and wanding.

Cry of Frustration: If target foe is using a skill, that foe and all foes in the area are interrupted and suffer 10...37 damage.
Troll Unguent: Skill. For 10 seconds, you gain health regeneration of +3...9.
I'm pretty sure CoF gets troll...and they also have maelstorm if you just happened to be standing still for no apparent reason. The elementalists never break aggro on me even when they're being Cof'd and e-surged. This ele group has costed me far too many plats.
I run in there with TU, get in range of skele group, TU again (now at like 2xx hp) shoot an arrow, run back, try to troll again, and if I get the troll off without incendiary bonds/fireballs going off, I have made the run. Usually it turns out with me on the floor but there's still satisfaction in watching my killers get raped by skeletons.

Well, heres is what I use.
Distracting shot
Dual shot
Poison arrow
Kindle arrows
Troll ungent
Storm chaser
Physical Protection
Favorable Winds
Expertise: 9+1
Wilderness: 11+1
Marksmanship: 10+1+1
Inspiration: 4 (or 3.. can't remember..)
I'm sure most of the skills have been mentioned here before, but not sure about the attribute points. Plus I'm way too lazy to re-read the entire 13 page thread
I'm sure that by going with less wilderness I'm killing sheperds and spirit woods slower, but with 12 into marksmanship, spiders are going down much faster.
As most here, I'm having a very tough time getting into chest run groups now... And have yet to see those 3+ shard runs... I'm still hopefull though!

You can always just stand and watch the skeleton group. If they're close enough you can guarantee there wanderings will eventually bring them into a brawl. Occasionally you can run straight past the shadows and down the side of the skeletons without having to draw agro at all.
Pulling them is a bitch though, normally ends up getting me very nearly killed, usually though if you agro the skels then run back instantly they don't follow you, but then after you've healed if you come close enough they run forwards anyway and run straight into the shadows and start fighting.

That was an odd run... 3 shards before i even got past the first lot of spiders, then 2 red dyes till the next group of spiders. Then due to shitty positioning all 3 shepherds in the next group spiked me without moving...
The nerf on Dual Shot is really getting annoying, it use to recharge perfectly with Savage Shot, now its just irritating.

Anyone else run into the glitch where shepards are actually farther/closer then their visual forms show? Too many times i've been killed when i think i'm really out of cast range, but magically, they're closer..

I see that sometimes too. Not just with the Forest run, but against spiders on the beach too.
