I noticed something similar too, maybe it's not the same thing, but it may help.
I was aiming for the master's reward, so I took my time. After the waves of mobs has ended, I've slowly cleared all the map, and killed the 1st and 2nd bonus harbingers without any problems. Then I engaged the final boss, and after a few seconds, suddenly BOOM, all my party was dead!
So I retried again but this time I was more carefully watching what is happening around. Here's what I discovered:
When you start to fight the last harbinger, and he reaches below 50% hp, Elder Jonah suddenly appears at the edge of your minimap, surrounded by a group of Margonites and fighting them. (despite, that you left him in the safety of the village before, and the whole map is already cleared...)
You have 2 choices:
- ignore the boss, quickly run back and save Elder Jonah
- try to finish the boss before Jonah dies (I found this harder to do)

Which is why, with all the GW "Protect so and so from a multitude of bad guys" missions you should consider the following strategy:
Take a good AoE team member (can be either Human or Hero) and stand in the middle of the village or compound in front of whoever you are protecting and let the mobs come to you. As they reach the edge of your agrro ring - kill them all.
Repeat for each mob - the game rarely sends all the mobs at once, it may look as though it does but that just means you aren't killing quickly enough.
This works for Nundu Bay, Thunderhead Keep and so on...

Is that a new glitch? I mean the elder jonah appear out of no-where and surrounded by mob thing. I have done the mission several times in the past, and one time recently (about a month ago?), but never noticed something like that.
I found this on wiki, it might be of some help
"Be careful to make sure that Elder Jonah does not attempt to follow you as you leave the beginning area to kill the Harbinger of Nightfall. If you have minions or a vampiric weapon, he will slowly follow, trying to outheal degen with Orison of Healing. After you are out of his range, however, he will remain stationary, often putting him in the range of margonite patrols. As mentioned above, if Elder Jonah dies, the mission ends."

Just stay in spawn and let them rush in, Once you've cleared out a pretty big bit then go out and try to avoid aggro and finish the mish.

When you going out of village - see that Elder remain on bridge, there new group of Margonites wont kill him. I had wondered the same until I saw that he dies (he dies so fast that you might not noticed that at all). Kill all Margonites in area before taking water, and than go straight across the bridge - if you go left or right, Elder will stay in some other area, or follow you almost to cave and than get killed when last group came.
Or you can go with friend - If you have two special spells and high damage you can kill last Harbringer so fast that the last group won't show at all.

the easiest way to complete this mission is to take one aoe hero a mm hero and a prot. hero and clear all the enemies in site before taking the vile of purifed water from the elder, this will make the mission much easier and you'll have a 100% chance of the elder surviving

That explains why he followed me to get the 2 bonus harbangers.
I still didn't have a problem, even with him following, while H/Hing the mission.

Well I recently did it again on my second sin. I followed the advice of some folks to clear all patrols in the area prior to taking the blessing. I cleared the fortress where the 2 additional harbingers are located too while at it and the Margonites at the location of the last harbinger too.
Once I took the blessing I repelled the small waves with the bosses that came and left thereafter to kill the two additional harbingers. I was sure I had left Jonah at the village. His name was gray as an ally. But lo and behold there he was right behind us. Luckily there weren't any patrols left to threaten him when he solo marched to our location.
I then proceeded to kill the last harbinger who was standing there alone.
It was an easy master reward, but I don't recall Elder Jonah doing that from back when I had last done it.
