I think the fastest way is still to do the cooperatives til you get here. Or buy a run, but this is not really worth it, the missions are not so long and you would really lose something otherway.
And, believe me, you don't want mox, he's more a trouble than an help, if you really want some heroes just unlock the very first nightfall (and eye if you have it) heroes.

I found MoX to be very useful especially early on how exactly is he more trouble than help?

He's big. Usually, if you are not a melee, he tends to stay in front of you and block your visual. The usual problem with golems. Melonni is equally avalaible and doesn't have those problems.
However, if someone, like you, finds him helpful, good for him/her.

Follow the explorables: http://gem.users.paivola.fi/GW/Tyria100%25.jpg
However, if you don't know how to get to LA from Ascalon, you are obviously a new player. When you obtain MOX, he/it is already level 20. If you were to use him in low level areas like Ascalon it will make the game very easy and you won't get better at it. I seriously don't recommend rushing ahead to get him.

I am indeed a new player to guild wars. I mainly wanted M.O.x. because I didn't want to rely off of henchmen all the time(laugh at me if it turns out the henchmen are free).
Also does anyone know of possibly any other heroes available in prophecies?

Henchmen are totally free, but prophecies ones are also totally dumb (especially some of them). Anyone feel free to contest this.
There's no other hero avalaible in prophecies, as they were first disegned at nightfall release and mox is just a bonus one for people who owns all 3 campaigns. But, as soon as you unlock travels, and that appens in Lion's Arch you have Vekk, Ogden (from Eye, if you have it), Dunkoro, Talkora, Koss and Melonni (from Nightfall) asap. And also Olias, Acolyte Jin/Acolyte Sousuke with very little effort, always from nightfall.
Heores are not so good in the beginning as you have to make their builds so you need to unlock a pretty amount of skills from them. But, IMHO, even with their default skills they're always better than prophecies henchmen, also because you can level them up, unlike henchmen who are at a fixed level in an outpost (sometimes uncomfortably low).
