I tried to start a discussion of this in the MPB drop thread, but no one really bit. My general theory is that just deleting the .dat files would not work, because I personally don't believe that the file would even cause a difference in the loading screen when it had to load it on a MPB run, but if you had a program to detect .dat files that were being used by the client you would be able to detect it upon entry.

However, whether such a program exists or is even possible, I do not know..

Guild wars downloads files while you play, not just while you're loading. That's why when you activate a minipet you haven't seen before you just see it's shadow while the game downloads the model. gg

Anyway, if anything, the icon needs to be downloaded. Which I doubt it's done at the beginning - the client can also stream data during the istance.

Even if there's some data streaming at the beginning, it might be there for the icon to be cached within the .DAT: some data transfers are likely scripted and not on-demand. Just try accessing Kaineng Center right after the Wintersday update: Kaineng Center is unaltered, but files for redecorations are loaded regardless, and I'm pretty sure both the icon and the model for the MPB are there among the other data...
