is the game worth it when playing solo?
I now have a lvl 3 Ranger/Necro. I am in the catacombs...and taking a pretty good beating...i hold my own for a while but I am on the quest to place the 4 candles in the four corners of the cata's and i keep finding myself fighting these two raging cadavers who just lay the smack down on me....I know that the area im trying to get to is holding some secret if even just another spot to palce a candle. I guess my question is when I started up the game, i selected the "single player" mode ( best i can describe it) and although I do see other online players, Ive just been going solo for a while to learn and build up and experience more before i hook with a team and get them all killed. just wondering if my attempts at building a strong character are futile.

Two raging cadavers? That's not the right room for the candles...There isn't a "single player" mode, are you new to Guild Wars? It kinda seems like it, this isn't like WoW or CoH or "your avarage" MMORPG, You can see other players in towns/outposts, but the only people you'll see outside of them are yourself and your party (if you have one)
Welcome to Guild Wars :P

i guess what i mean by single palyer mode is i am not in a party...not yet ( i am playing solo)
yes new to the game and very new to online play....ive been gaming for over 30 years if you can beleive it and for some reason the recent advent of online gaming just hasnt appealed to me too much....i guess cuz when i tried my hand at UNREAL when it first came out i was fragged by every 13 year old out there who were simply better at the fast paced environment of that game.
anyway, GW so far really rocks hope i can fully realize it's and my own potential

you are still in the tutorial and that whole area is meant to do by yourself
if something is to hard now do some other quests and come back
these might help a bit

Believe me -- this game is great
I play solo mostly with the AI Henchmen ( you can't get those yet... ) for the extra challenge and the fact that I can keep all the bounty
The campaign and missions are always interesting. And the world is vast and beautiful. Some encounters are very tough -- just keep at it -- Attempt an easier quest -- level up and swap skills on the bar -- and try again . Don't be afraid to attempt a quest and fail -- you can always retry and there's a virtually nill penalty for dieing ( traveling to a town will remove the death penalty )
Also you have to bear in mind -- that a Ranger / Necro isn't gonna be the best melee fighter ( besides the combination -- being "weak" at lower levels )
If your charging in battle this is likely why your dieing... Also some build combinations just aren't good at being self-sufficient -- they rely on others to deal out and take punishment...
Raging Cadavers are quite the tough opponent espcially when they "gang up". Their magic attacks can lower your HP quickly. My Warrior got his butt kicked at first -- As soon as I multi-classed and added a few levels of Monk. They didn't stand a chance....
Any form of Holy Damage works wonderfully against undead forms ( zombies, ghosts, etc )
EDIT: There must be some Rangers / Necro's out there that know how to deal with the undead -- my Monk-Specific advice won't do him much good

Sorry to burst your bubble, you have to share you money and exp, even with henchmen. And once you get to about lions arch, you can't solo anymore, everything will kill you, even if you're at max level.

solo and solo+hench are too different things, as you know, having these things called "allies" on your "team" makes your team more than one person, and no longer solo.

the candles are somewhere else, just look at the arrow when you enter the catacombs
I would venture in the catacombs later, with life siphon you can drain one of them while pelting the other one with arrows and regenerate life in the meantime.

It's not entirely true that you can't solo past Lion's Arch. The biggest difference is that, past a certain point, it is impossible to efficiently solo content at your level. There's also a sequence of missions where playing with henchmen is impossible due to some henchmen attributes, and also a number of missions later on where using henchmen is absolutely infuriatingly difficult, but the game is designed for play in teams, and generally ill-suited or balanced for solo play.

Since you are new--make sure you spend your attribute points when you level. Trust me--it makes a difference.
I have a ranger/monk but did not get my second profession till right before leaving Pre-Searing. Got my second class and then got the skils I needed.
I played quite a bit of pre as a ranger/necro. Make SURE you get your pet ASAP. running the catacombs with a level 5 cat makes it tons easier. When you hunt--use a longbow (it has the farthest range).
Also--once you have a pet--you need to remember that spells/skills will not trigget your pet to attack--you need to either dbl click on the enemy or hit the spacebar. You should see your character either run closer and start shooting--or just start shooting. At that point your pet will rush in to engage. If you get multiple creatures--make sure you attack the next one as soon as the first drops--start casting your raise minion spell and you should have 2 pets helping you.
Between your pet and your spells (troll unguent is your friend)--you should be okay taking on multiple enemies lower level than you. As you get more familiar with the game mechanics as well as your skills--you will soon be taking on multiples your level or so.
Also--it might not hurt to try to find the ranger armor collectors around --every little bit of armor helps.

Well Solo means by urself, without ANY help ... so no henchmen neither...
But in GW thats near to impossible, not because the help is that strong, but because the enemy would otherwise just gang up on you making it impossible to get out of there alive...
So soloing in GW is usually just another word for partying with henchmens...
Most people confuse this with the actual solo because they see it as solo because tehy dont play with any HUMAN help...
About soloing, you can get pretty far, but nothing beats some good teamwork with humans, especially because humans can anticipate, and react/adept to the situation at hand...

..."you cant 'SOLO' with henchies..."
God this type of entertainment is freaking priceless

Says who? hehe. I guess maybe some class mixes can solo (without henchmen) but I play mes-nec so I need a group to do anything. I think because its fallen into the MMORPG genre mostly when people refer to soloing in GW they mean with henchmen (been my experience anyway) whether you take one or 6.
The reason for this of course is because the game is designed in a "team" balance way, that is classes highlight one another and are all pretty gimpy on there own. So in a real sense this game is terrible "solo" if you mean that in a WoW way (you alone), but it is a dream come true for "solo" play (that is you as the lone player and your group made of NPCs).

I solo (alone no henchies) things in the southern part of the Shiverpeaks (near Draknor's Forge). If your smart about it, carry the right kind of skills and armor you can do quite a bit of killing by yourself. Not to mention there are quite a few videos of people soloing Sanctum Cay quest right here these boards (that's without henchies).

try not to waste your energy using death swarm; you're a ranger, and you don't have 4 energy regen like other caster professions. i fooled around with a R/N myself, and one time, i put all my attribute points into death magic; my bone horror was so strong i hardly had to lift a finger. but of course, against monsters that don't leave corpses(undead, golems), i'm useless, so i found myself switching around with my attributes a lot.
what you'll want to do now is to get more skills. as a ranger primary, you get 3 sets of skills, from
1. the starter ranger NPC you meet outside ascalon
2. ranger nente that teaches you charm animals; so you can have an animal companion. find him by going south from ashford.
3. ranger aidan, who gives you dual shot and another skill i don't remember(was it kindle/ignite arrows?). find him by going way, way south from ashford.
as a necromancer 2ndary, you only get 2 sets, from
1. munne, who gave you that 3 skills you have, and gave you your 2ndary profession.
2. kasha blackblood, who will give you several blood magic skills. find her in the green hills, by going northwest from ascalon.
as you can see, you're given more than one way to heal yourself; troll's unguent, life syphon, and another skill kasha will give you that gives more health regen. other professions will have their own ways to heal, so the beginning part of the game really is manageable by yourself.
