There are many types of Monks. Specializing in condition/hex removal, pure healing, or protection.
A team should have at least 1 protection-based monk and 1 healer monk and maybe a healer+condition/hex removal mix monk. Protection Monks should be mo/e for wards. Note that those are general tips, but general stuff is easy to get started on.
I played a monk today with a guild mix and didn't have too many problems staying alive. Our protection monk helped me defend against spike damage with protective spirit and ward of melee kept me pretty safe from warriors. When I did get targeted Divine Boon with 15 DF combined with orison and reversal of fortune was generally enough to keep me alive till our third monk could use word of healing or the protection monk use whichever elite he had.
Play around with stuff. See what you like, see what works. Remember to have at least 1 way of keeping your energy sustained though.
