Default Monking Around with Henchmen

After a lot of frustration I have successfully self rushed my monk to the Crystal Desert and am now level 11. However I am finding myself doing more running around avoiding monsters than actually healing my henchmen.

My question is what strategies do other monks with henchmen employ to keep more of the mobs focus on the henchmen and not on me? Since I have to do the target calling, I end up getting the first attention of all of the mobs and end up running around trying not to die. Is there a better way?

One thing I did in the desert (and most areas) was get aggro by first getting inside the aggro circle of mobs. Then once I see Ihave their attention I run back. Usually the henchmen will run forward to attack and then you can stop and heal, and direct fire. This doen'st work well on hydras though, because they start casting fireball and/or meteor shower right when you get in aggro range, so good luck with that since you won't survive long against a hydra's spell....

Let the henchmen get the first hit. Aggro the mobs with your bubble and let them hit you so the henchies defend you. Then back off and heal em up. Most of the time I just attack first and side-step the aggro off (running forward and backward = higher chance of critical hits from the mobs).

If you use crtl+shift+enter close enough, your henchmen will attack it. This is much better than using regular attack or shift+enter as they don't break from the target if they haven't reached it yet.

I've found starting attack outside of aggro range, so your running towards the bad guys, then casting a long duration self only buff keeps you "busy", but still sends the henchies into the fight.

(Purge signet for a monk - doesn't "waste" any mana)

I'm afraid even with targetting the mobs still went after my monk. To rid them from me I just employed running around in and out of my henchmen with varying success so mobs would peel off me. It is certainly more challenging than being a warrior with henchies, although you have superior control of healing being a monk

Once you target the mob and the hench start forward you run backward further than you need to. You need to keep all mobs out of your sphere of aggro on the radar. Many mobs will pass the warriors looking for casters, you need to never be in their radar range, most likely they'll stop at your healers/caster hench and start beating on one.

Once all the mobs are actually hitting and not looking you can start to heal your hench. I usually let the other healers heal the melee but you heal the casters. If you can get there work around so you can heal the melee in a pinch but don't have to brush up against the ones hitting your casters.

here is how i do it and it ALWAYS works. i played through the last mission with this technique.

One thing that is important is: your desired target has to be outta aggro range of other (too) dangerous things (at the moment).

Aquire your target. position yourself 1,5x your aggro range away from target.

click ctrl+shift+space

wait, maybe go back a few steps.

watch the henchies do their job.

engage now, to your liking.

now IF you desire to PULL a mob outside someones range THIS is how i do it:

target it, walk up to it, till it notices you. walk back, till it is outside aggro range of its pesky mob friends. while still walking backwards, press ctrl shift space. wait.
engage.
rinse, repeat

If you have to use a bow to pull something: walk backward THE MOMENT you fired. so stefan and thom wont engage.

now have fun with your henchies

i am a protection monk and my game got incredibly easy with this!

Good suggestions, but may I say the desert wasn't intended for a 11 player.

dont know how to say it in english but:

you, sir, are narrow-minded.

I beat my mirror at level 14 and it was FUN.

I believe Kuku beat it at level 9, and i am yet to hear of a lower record.

My only suggestion here is ... play the game!! Desert isn't meant for level 11s, so of course you're having problems.

if you're there it means you haven't played the game at all, skipped all quests and just run (or been leeched) through the missions. what's the point?

If they can/want to do it, good for them ... but this guy apparently can't, that's what the complaint was about, wasn't it?

Thank you all for your tips. They will be put to good use. I've been going through the desert quite well now and have knocked off the easy dunes mission to start.

I've already played through the game with my elementalist. For my monk, I skipped every mission except of course Sanctum Cay. However, I have fought my way through everything myself with henchmen. I do not leech off of anyone as I find that disgusting. The point is that I noticed an extreme lack of monks in the later missions. I wanted to get a monk there as soon as possible to help this problem. I will not leech off of any players so you no longer need to worry about me ruining someone's gaming experience.
