Why do i suck so horribly?
Ok, so i made a custom pvp character. He doesnt have crap for spells, but i tried it out anyways. So i was using flare, firestorm, The regen aura, backfire, and empathy.
What i was doing is running around, cast backfire on thier healer, and just flareing the garbage outta him. Also, i used conjure phantasm. Problem is, i do about 0 damage. I was under the impression that mages (especially fire) do enourmous dmg. So afetr i sucked it up there, i tried to use one of the already made templates, and went with phyromancer.
IS there somethign im missing? ( besides spells, i tried to use the template" phyromancer" but it still didnt seem tp put out the hurt). Should i just finish unlocking everything and go with a different element?

Don't use firestorm, smart people will run out from under it. Backfire is a good idea.

Read around the forums. Pay attention to those people who clearly know what they're talking about and try to understand the underlying game mechanics and how to create a successful build. Go and practice and think about why you aren't being affective. Think logically about improving your play and think often and you will do so very fast.

You're using a random concoction of skills you got in pre-searing, of course you're doing horribly.
Play through the game, unlock more skills, and gain a better understanding of how the skills work.
Learn the general rules of play, and then learn when those rules don't apply.
Sustained AoE, for example:
Sustained AoE works in PvE because monsters will stand inside of it very often. In PvP, players see the animation and take damage, so they move.
Or do they?
If you have 2 warriors mobbing your monk, and you cast AoE's on them, they have 2 options:
Move out of the AoE and stop attacking the monk.
or
Stand in the AoE and continue attacking the monk.
For the arena, you'll find the latter most often is chosen. The AoE's may not do much damage on a single target, but when you compare the total damage to the energy cost on multiple targets, and the DPS (while you're also hitting their squishy people), it becomes a lot more effective. A monk that has to heal 2 warriors standing in AoE spells, in addition to themself under focus fire soon becomes depleted of energy.
Except, this is pretty conditional, and there're other skills more effective at accomplishing that than AoE damaging spells. The point is to demonstrate that what may be held as common knowledge as totally useless, is instead actually just conditional in use.
Experience with the skills, unlocking and using them, will teach you which ones are too conditional to be practical, and which ones are not.
They will also enable you to be more aware of your opponent's strategies.
For example, in the arenas, especially with 2 enemy monks, you may notice the enchantment symbol for monk spells on people with no monk profession. It could be any number of things, but you should figure out what is based on the animation and effects. If it's something like Life Bond or Life Barrier, it's imperative that you realize that earlier, rather than later.
So play the game, become familiar with what skills do what, when they're useful, how to bring about the conditions to make them useful, and how to tell when your opponent is using them, so that you can exploit that to your advantage.

A. QFE.
B. If you are in the random team arena your team usually doesn't work together well (and many times has no monk) and thus I would suggest bringing along some self healing other than Aura of Restoration.
