Cyclone axe is a good skill to use for crowd control, especially when combined with a zealous axe haft (or whatever it is called that upgrades the prefix of the axe).

Seriously though, sword is not as effective in PvE, mainly due to the lack of a good area effect attack (except for hundred blades but that is elite and still not as good as cyclone ax) and not as many nice high damage adrinaline skills.

Aside from that, consider putting points into tactis and using stances like bonetti's etc.

If you are going to focus on soloing, remember that it is not all about damage, but about creating a balance with the number of mobs on you, their damage and your abilty to handle that damage. In terms of priorities, the damage you inflict comes after these.

i would recommend to you using both. sword has some nice skills such as riposte and deadly riposte for pve. axe is definitely better for large crowds unless you can get your armor so high that you are getting hit for 0-3 dmg. I go swords in some solo farming and axes in others.
